TWO of the teams who secured maximum points on the opening day meet in the first big clash of the All Rounder Bradford Premier League season tomorrow.

Heavyweights Woodlands and Hanging Heaton clash in the first Premier Division match to be played on the newly-relaid square at Albert Terrace.

The project, funded with a substantial grant from the Sport England playing facilities budget, has involved creating 14 new wickets and the installation of an irrigation system.

Woodlands secretary Brian Pearson said: "The old square was ripped up at the end of last season. All of the new wickets are completely level and our contractors have been pleased with how things have settled down.

"Our second team played on one of the outer wickets last week and scored 274-6 against Undercliffe. Tomorrow's match will be played on the centre wicket."

Woodlands also have a new captain this season, with opening batsman Tim Jackson leading the side following his transfer from Cleckheaton.

Jackson has taken over from Pieter Swanepoel, who led Woodlands to league title wins in 2011 and 2012. The former Yorkshire bowler has joined All Rounder ECB Yorkshire Premier League South side Whitley Hall.

Jackson believes the new square will prove to be a boost for the club. He said: "In the past, Woodlands have needed to win an extra game compared to their rivals because their bonus points total has been low.

"This has been due to them not being able to make big enough scores or because they have bowled sides out too cheaply. The new wickets should improve our chances of making the sorts of scores that help to earn more bonus points."

Jackson, who led his new side to a 146-run win away to newly-promoted Scholes last week, will be handicapped by the loss of two of his front-line bowlers.

Wily spinner Chris Brice and young paceman Elliot Richardson are missing as they take on a Hanging Heaton side who Jackson believes will go the distance in the title race.

"They have a good side and I feel that they will be challengers along with Cleckheaton, Pudsey St Lawrence and ourselves," he said.

Pudsey Congs, the third team to take maximum points last week, host New Farnley, while defending champions Pudsey St Lawrence visit Farsley.

Cleckheaton and Morley, both winners last week, meet at Moorend, with the matches between Lightcliffe and Scholes and East Bierley and Bradford & Bingley featuring fours sides beaten on the opening day.
