FORMER Woodhouse Grove pupil Naomi Broady has rebounded from her first-round defeat in the women's singles qualifying at the Australian Open to reach the semi-finals of the $50,000 Tennis Championships of Maui in Hawaii.

Playing her second three-set singles of the day, the 25-year-old Briton was beaten 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 by top seed and eventual winner Christina McHale of the United States, who is world-ranked 63.

Earlier in the tournament, the third-seeded Stockport woman had defeated Lyudmyla Kichenok (Ukraine) 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; qualifier and AEGON Ilkley Trophy runner-up Madga Linette (Poland) 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Jacqueline Cako (United States) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 before losing to McHale.

In the doubles, third seeds Broady and Paula Kania (Poland) reached the semi-finals, going down 2-6, 6-3, 12-10 to Americans Jessica Pagula and Taylor Townsend.

In the Australian Open, Broady was beaten by an opponent who made no unforced errors!

The world No 112 lost 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to fellow 25-year-old Alize Lim (France), who is ranked 159.

Broady served seven aces and ten double faults during the 1hr 53min clash, also hitting seven other winners but making ten unforced errors, while Lim served no double faults.
