NEW Bulls recruit Kris Welham is not fazed by the prospect of going to the likes of Workington, Whitehaven and Batley next season.

Jimmy Lowes’ side found life tough during their two trips to Cumbria last term and also struggled to overcome Batley and Dewsbury on their own patch.

With Oldham and Swinton having been promoted to the Championship, the Bulls will play at two more new grounds but Welham is ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

The 28-year-old centre has spent his entire career with Hull KR and accepts that life in the Championship will be very different to Super League.

Welham said: “I’m told there is a lot of bad grounds and bad pitches in the Championship.

“I’ve heard a lot of stories about grounds such as Workington and Whitehaven.

“I’m not too worried about it at the moment, but it probably is a psychological thing that you have to get your head around and dig deep for those eighty minutes.

“It’s about going in and out having got the job done but I’ve got a lot of experience of these grounds down the years.

“I’ve played for Hull KR at Batley on their sloped pitch and for England Knights at Workington, where the changing room was tiny, very cold and the pitch was very wet and sloppy.

“I’ve got experience of playing on those two grounds and they’re not the best, but I got through that and I’m sure I’ll get through it again.”

Welham has actually played in the second tier of English rugby league before, having burst onto the scene with Rovers in their promotion-winning side under Justin Morgan in 2006.

He recalled: “I made my debut that year at Leigh’s old ground and also played away at Workington, so I kind of know what to expect from this division.”
