Queensbury 28, Odsal Sedbergh 6

QUEENSBURY secured bragging rights and a place in the third round of the Pennine President's Cup on a harsh afternoon at Deanstones Lane.

Both sides were really tested by a combination of driving rain, strong winds and freezing temperatures.

It was no surprise that expansive football was set aside for a short passing game, with both sets of forwards battling for supremacy up the middle.

Queensbury struck first after just two minutes when the impressive Liam Ruff crashed over the whitewash for a try converted by Jonny Norman.

However, Sedge hit back quickly when, after a period of sustained pressure, hard-working loose forward Scott Smith dived over, Steve Suddards levelling the scores with the conversion.

This was a good old-fashioned derby and it was no surprise when tempers flared midway through the half, resulting in Jimmy Simpson of Queensbury and Sedge opponent Paul Bottomley being dispatched to the sin-bin, while John Parr was voluntarily withdrawn.

The game-changer proved to be the arrival of home forward Tom Hainsworth from the bench.

Hainsworth posted the first of his three tries when he took a short ball off loose forward Joe Flanagan to score out wide and give his side a 10-6 advantage at the break.

The second half began with Sedge taking the fight to Bury, half-back Suddards prompting and marshalling his forwards.

Yet they could not make the pressure count and were hit by a sucker punch from Hainsworth when he again proved too strong for the Sedge defence, Norman's extras stretching the hosts' advantage to 16-6.

Hainsworth rounded off his hat-trick minutes later when he supported a Jack Evison break to outpace the defence to the line.

And the game was put out of Odsal's reach on 59 minutes when a neat chip over their defensive unit allowed centre Ash Ryan to touch down and make it 24-6.

Winger Alex Detouche finished off the Queensbury scoring with a fine try when he backed up a Sam Cheney break to race in at the corner.
