GRANGEFIELD Old Boys Reserves led visitors Headingley Reserves 2-0 via a Jack Hill brace in their West Riding County FA Trophy second-round tie but ended up losing 3-2 to the better team.

However, Stanningley Old Boys did manage to protect a two-goal lead in the Leeds & District FA Cup.

The surprise was that it was against last season's semi-finalists Hunslet Club Reserves, who did not put up the expected resistance.

Second-half goals from Ross McGowan and Matt Wilson put Stanningley into the quarter-finals, where they will be joined by four other Yorkshire Amateur League sides.

There was predictably no upset when Division Five outfit Drighlington Reserves hosted West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division opponents Littletown – in essence, a gap of six divisions – with the visitors winning 6-0, despite a battling home display.

The Yorkshire Amateur League fixtures were badly hit by the weather, with the eagerly-awaited Premier Division match between Farsley Celtic Juniors and Farnley Sports being one of the casualties. There were also no matches for either of the St Bede's teams, Fairbank United or Calverley.

More unlucky was Drighlington's visit to Garforth, which was abandoned because the referee was taken ill, an ambulance having to be called.

In the games that did finish, Trinity Old Boys performed a smash-and-grab raid against Stanningley Old Boys in the Premier Division.

Johnny Brown, who was Trinity's man of the match, and defensive colleague Matt Wilkinson gave a magnificent backs-to-the-wall display, with the only goal coming from the one meaningful shot from team-mate Ross Hamilton with ten minutes left.

Visitors Stanningley, who drop to sixth, were the better team but their attack was found wanting as Trinity climbed to seventh, with both teams having six points from four outings.

There was a titanic clash in Division Two between 100 per cent duo Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves and Gildersome Spurs Old Boys.

Visitors Gildersome admitted to being second best but not by a 3-0 margin, with two of the goals coming in the final ten minutes.

Steve Wells proved the difference with a hat-trick that took his tally to an amazing 32 goals, his first goal coming from a powerful header in the 20th minute from a pin-point Sam Ford cross after a superb pass by skipper Alex Gyte.

Stanningley came more into the contest in the second half and had a goal disallowed before Wells poked home a near-post corner in the 80th minute. He then wrapped things up nine minutes later after being put through one-on-one with keeper Tyler Thompson.

Celtic are six points clear now, although Stanningley have a game in hand.
