AVENUE are used to being one of the biggest names in the FA Cup qualifiers because of their Football League past.

But they arguably have to play second fiddle this afternoon against third qualifying round hosts Salford City.

The profile of the Salford side rocketed after five of Manchester United's 'Class of 92' bought into it. Current United assistant manager Ryan Giggs, England number two Gary Neville, his brother and Valencia assistant Phil, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt are all involved.

It could only have had a higher profile had another of the graduates, David Beckham, decided to share their dream and swap his MLS franchise in Miami for a stake.

Avenue and the 'Ammies' have met in the FA Cup previously, long before the club became nationally known, but there was a Giggs involved even then. Ryan's brother Rhodri scored the goal that clinched it at Horsfall Stadium 15 years ago.

Avenue boss Martin Drury hopes that the clubs could soon be meeting on a regular basis.

"They are high profile, get very good crowds and they have not stopped to catch their breath since earning promotion last term," said Drury.

"They are pushing at the top end of their league (Evo-Stik Premier) and are clearly on a mission. We have seen sides rise through the leagues in spectacular fashion before and I hope Salford do go on to get promoted.

"We've seen it with FC United of Manchester and now they're in our league and if Salford joined them it would be another big derby game for us.

"It would be another game that the supporters would look out for and look forward to, which is great for them.

"Whatever happens today, I wish Salford all the best in the league and I'd love to see them in our league because – like FC United – they play great football and in the right spirit.

"You really want those games with a high intensity and good atmosphere."
