TYERSAL put aside their league form to make progress in the first round of the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory at Huddersfield-based Division One side DRAM Community FC.

The scores were level at 4-4 at the end of normal time with two goals each for Tyersal’s Jamie Sugden and Ben McArdle, while Brandon Smith (2), Craig Thompson and Alex Sanderson were on target for DRAM.

Tyersal held their nerve to squeeze out a 7-6 victory, and book a home game in the next round with Huddersfield YMCA, who beat West Yorkshire League Wetherby Athletic 6-1.

After drawing 2-2 with Division One leaders Newsome, Littletown won the penalty lottery 4-2.

The tie between Ovenden West Riding and Brighouse Town was also settled by penalties, with Brighouse winning 7-6 after a goalless 90 minutes.

Steeton travelled to Goole United, who play in the Humber Premier League, and returned home with a 4-3 victory.

Midway through the second half, Steeton were leading 4-0 following strikes from Sam Rooke, Andy King, Lee Reilly and Tim Hird.

They appeared set for a comfortable victory, but were then left to defend in depth as strikes from Rob Constable (2) and Tom Bryan pulled the hosts back into the game.

Poor first-half defending by Salts allowed Dewsbury-based Thornhill to gain a 4-3 success, with Salts claiming second-half goals from Joe Pleasance, Richard Magson and Jonny Cunnington.

Meanwhile, Campion’s reserve team moved into the next phase with a 4-2 victory at Halifax League side Copley United with Chris Helliwell bagging a hat-trick and Cameron Green also on target.

There were also victories for Lower Hopton, who beat Stanley United 1-0 with a Sylbert Stewart goal, while Golcar United edged out Harrogate League side Hampsthwaite 2-0.

Lepton Highlanders saw second-half strike from Jonathon Bullivant give them a 1-0 success at Rawdon Old Boys, whilst Overthorpe had a 5-1 success at Marley Stadium over Craven League side FC Polonia.

Hunsworth and Wibsey were both on the end of heavy defeats.

Hunsworth were crushed 18-1 at Halifax Irish, and Wibsey lost 11-2 at home to Leeds City.

With most sides on County FA Cup duty, only a handful of league games were possible, but in the Taylors Timber Premier Division Campion beat Kirkburton 4-1.

Jordan Missin scored twice to add to Gavin Armitage and Adam Jarratt efforts with Danny Simpson netting the visitors’ consolation.

In Division One, Ventus Yeadon Celtic beat Steeton Reserves 3-2 with goals from Daniel Backhouse, Nat Dacres and Kyle Shah to move into fifth place, level on points with Overthorpe.

West Horton dropped down a place after losing 4-2 at home to newcomers Holmfirth Town.

Route One Rover stay at the top of Division Two after drawing 1-1 at home to Golcar United Reserves, while TVR United beat Littletown Reserves 5-4 to move into second place level on points with Route One Rovers.

Thornton United put aside their League Cup defeat against Ovenden West Riding Reserves, and gained a valuable point with Dave Williams scoring twice and Brendan Maltby also notching as the two sides shared six goals in a 3-3 draw.
