OSCAR Thomas' end-of-season move from London Broncos to the Bulls will complete a circuitous journey for the lad from High Wycombe.

He grew up in Buckinghamshire playing rugby union and then tried his hand at league with the West London Sharks before being snapped up by the Broncos aged 12.

After a year at Premiership outfit London Irish, Thomas rejoined the Broncos last year and made his Super League debut against St Helens.

He will join the Bulls on a two-year deal at the end of the current campaign and insists he is not coming to make up the numbers.

"Ideally I'd like to be starting every week at Bradford," said the versatile stand-off, who is currently sidelined with a minor knee injury.

"I want to hit the ground running in pre-season and hopefully I'll get a position in the team by the time the season starts.

"Bradford are a big name in rugby league and they need to be back in Super League achieving things again.

"Hopefully I can do well there in the next two years. I had a chat with Jimmy (Lowes) recently and he sounded positive about the move.

"I've spoken to Elliot Kear about the Bulls and he had nothing but good things to say about the club."

Thomas attended the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe and played the 15-man code before being lured by the prospect of league.

The Scotland international explained: "I was just playing for my school and the London Wasps academy, so I didn't really know about rugby league at that point.

"But I thought I'd give it a go and I joined the West London Sharks in Feltham.

"It worked out well with union being in the winter and league in the summer, so I played both.

"It was about a half-hour drive and my old man would take me to training on a Wednesday evening and to games on a Saturday. He travels to all my games and is very supportive.

"The Broncos spotted me playing for West London Sharks and Phil Jones, who was in charge of the youth set-up, ended up having a word with me after one of the games. He said 'do you want to come down and give it a go?', so I did.

"The youth set-up at London is pretty strong and all the academy sides tend to run the northern teams pretty hard."

Thomas went through the youth ranks at the Broncos but a broken ankle during his time in the academy hindered his progress and he ended up heading back to union with London Irish.

"I went on trial first when I got released by the Broncos but because I had played union before, it wasn't hard to switch back," he said.

"They're completely different games but Irish have a really good set-up with their academy and first-team.

"I only played reserves and Sevens with them and was still on trial there, talking about contracts, when Joey Grima rang me last year and asked me if I wanted to come back to the Broncos.

"I gave it a go and tried to get some Super League experience because I'd always had a soft spot for London. Joey was really positive and set out a goal for me to play first-team rugby, which I did."

Indeed, Thomas followed the likes of Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Dan Sarginson, Tony Clubb, Mason Caton-Brown and Kieran Dixon in making his name at London before securing moves to bigger clubs.

"I always admired Jason Robinson with his pace and quick feet, plus he did it in both codes and was always exciting to watch," said Thomas, who caught the eye in his three appearances for the Broncos against the Bulls.

"My speed in attack and support play are my greatest strengths, plus my kicking game can also put teams under pressure.

"I've played most of this season in the halves and a little bit at full back, so they're my two favourite positions.

"Bradford have a really good squad and hopefully the boys can push on and win promotion now."

Thomas knows Omari Caro from the Broncos and has played with Danny Addy and Dale Ferguson for Scotland, admitting: "That just makes the transition easier.

"I'm doing rehab' on my knee and should be back soon, so hopefully I can help London win the Championship Shield and then play for Scotland in the European Championship later this year.

"I'm planning on coming up to Bradford in the next couple of weeks to have a look around and find somewhere to live when I arrive for pre-season in November. I'm looking forward to it already."
