Wethers: We've hit rock bottom

City were today waking up to the prospect of life back in the basement division as David Wetherall pleaded: Let's hope this is as low as it gets.

Saturday's pathetic 3-0 defeat at Chesterfield condemned the Bantams to relegation with one game still to go.

We’ll have to plan as best we can for next season and keep our fingers crossed and hope that this is the bottom and that we do bounce

David Wetherall

Wetherall, his voice cracking with emotion, admitted the team had completely let down the 1,600 away fans who had made the trip to Saltergate dreaming of a late escape from the drop.

Eight years after preparing to lead City into the Premiership, the caretaker-boss was forced to discuss their prospects in League Two.

"We've hoped for a long time that as a football club we've hit the bottom and bounced," said Wetherall. "But it's not really worked out like that.

"You look at the financial problems the club have had. We hoped to break even 18 months ago, we didn't; we still lost money and we've still lost money this season.

"We know we're going to be seen as a big club down there but we also know that purse strings get tightened.

"We've got players still under contract but we haven't got many and what money is available for others I don't know but we'll have to plan as best we can for next season and keep our fingers crossed and hope that this is the bottom and that we do bounce.

"I hope already that we have a good year next season and everybody gets positive about the football and about this club again."

City, who left the bottom division in 1982, went out with a whimper against a side also relegated alongside them because of Cheltenham's comeback win at Rotherham.

Donovan Ricketts let the first goal slither through his hands after 15 minutes and the visitors never looked like staging a recovery.

Wetherall added: "It was a sloppy goal that should never have gone in and that seemed to knock a lot of stuffing out of us. We didn't perform as an attacking force, didn't create enough, didn't pass the ball enough and didn't regain possession quickly enough. We didn't play to the principles we're trying to get into the team and that led to us losing a game we were all so desperate to win.

"I expected so much more and have to be very careful with what I say but we simply weren't good enough and got exactly what we deserved, which was nothing."

The City fans remained defiantly singing at the final whistle and Wetherall acknowledged the role they have played since he took over.

"The support we received was outstanding again and they deserved better. They gave us great backing and I thought it was really going to lift us but it's not worked out like that.

"Relegation is not just about Saturday, although the performance was nowhere near good enough, but the season as a whole and now it's been confirmed there is no hiding place.

"I'm feeling a mix of emotions but the over-riding one is obviously sadness for the football club and everyone connected with it."

I hope Wetherall is not the manager next season, stick to being a player Wether's, turn down the job if you are offered it.

David - if offered the managers job in the summer please do not accept it. I hope that you eventually go on to become a succesful manager but the City job, with all the restrictions brought about by our previous spells in administration; lack of quality and passion shown by the current players and the difficulties we will face in recruiting and financing fresh players with the hunger and desire we will need in division 4 (sorry, I am old school!) will be a major taskk for an experienced manager. We need David Wetherall to be focused entirely on playing and leading from the field of play. Your experience as a defender will be vital next season - please stick to what you do very well whilst learning the ropes from an experienced head. The caretaker role you have endured was always a poisoned chalice owing to the poor squad yo inherited. Your time as a manager will come - hopefully in much better circumstances where you will have the time and resources to learn from any mistakes. CTID

It hurts Wethers cos your one of us, unfortunately a large amount of the squad ( who we own) arent good enough to make the grade and the rest can go back to their parent clubs. We really need to have some bite and balls next season- it aint gonna be pretty. Perhaps get Law back in, i believe he was unfairly sacked before but does know the background of this division and whats needed.

.. I don't think Denis Law is interested in the City job. You can't possibly mean that joker who managed us several years, who goes by the same name?!

At the risk of a barrage of abuse I think wethers should just go completely. I dont want him at the club anymore, i do like the guy as a person but he is not helping the club at all. Apart from that first season in the premier he has done nothing. He has a depressing losing mentality and we need to rid that from the club. The players yesterday were a disgrace and would happily not see any of them ever again in a city shirt.

The one thing that we can take any comfort from this season is the fantastic support our club has - the fans have been an absolute credit. We have been one of the best supported teams in the division, in spite of the poor and passionless football served up by a team that has been shameful, particularly at home. We need to get the finances sorted out and find some players who want to play and show some team spirit and commitment. If we can get some cash for Windass and perhaps offload a couple of others, we will almost be rid of the high earners from previous years and can base pay on being in the fourth division, with sensible wages and payment by performance. I hope that the fantastic supporters stay with the club next season and have better football to watch. To get out of this division, you need to have organisation, motivation and strong, fit players - so we obviously need a new broom to sweep clean! I don't see many players at this club that fit the bill or who are up for the challenge. Well done, City fans - proud of you.

Dave S, as you're born in Bradford, I'm gutted that you're a Leeds fan. Perhaps if all the football supporting public born in Bradford supported their local team, City wouldn't be in their current financial position. I find Bradfordians supporting Leeds (or Liverpool or Manchester Utd.) no less bizarre than an English person supporting Germany. Do you support the Rhinoceroses too?

I for one know where you are coming from. With so many players out of contract this season, it is time to get a big broom and clear out the dead wood. Personally, I would let the following players go:

Edgill, Bower (poss to Burnley if rumours are true), Wetherall (the head is still there but the legs left a couple of seasons ago), Windass (should receive a decent fee from Hull OR poss Wigan), Brown (not even as good as Sanasy or Forrest), Howarth (never really looked like putting pressure on Ricketts), Muirhead (don't know why Wethers brought him back. Having said that, still don't know why Todd re-signed him after Robbo released him), oh and not forgetting Bridge-Wilkinson (not really delivered after his first decent season).

I would like us to keep:

Ricketts, Swift, Clarke, Ainge, Barrau, Schumacher, E Johnson, Penford, Bentham, Daley and Colbeck.

I would like to see us try to bring back:

Dyer, Weir-Daley and Parker (as long as we play him at left back!), Wilbraham OR Steve Torpey.

For Wethers, it is going to be almost impossible to play alongside players you were giving the hair dryer treatment to at the end of this season. His salary will be fairly high and for league 2, we could do without it. I salute the legend that is David Wetherall, but now is the perfect time to go.

Have you been watching City this season? Serious question.

Players you would like to keep Barrau, Schumacher, Daley and Colbeck.

Schumacher is a waste of space and needs to be kicked into touch, abusing the fans yesterday who travelled to watch that spineless rubbish was well out of order. Barrau has done what exactly? Colbeck is no good and should be sent out to Halifax with his buddies Forrest and Co and finally last and certainly least Daley is the biggest waste of space of them all. Wondered why all the fans have nicknamed him Arthur Daley, he is complete and utter rubbish and I doubt he is even a footballer. Talking of Arthur Daley I would rather have him in my team than Omar any day of the week.

We need a clearout, these players aren't good enough and don't put in the required effort, the sooner we get shut the better.

I hope a new manager comes in and takes this club by the scruf of the neck and does what Roy Keane has done to Sunderland and get rid of anyone who is seen to not put in 100%. I can take deafeat from lack of ability but I won't take it for lack of effort.

I think there needs to be a clear out and i don't think we can afford any players who will be ours it;s going to be loans again next season but as long as they play good and do good for the club does it really matter who they are we need to go back up and we need decent players we can afford and maybe if the younger lads get a chance to perform at pre-season we might see sumat but apart from that who knows no money no players no players stay in league 2!

When that bunch of guttless wonders walk onto the sacred valley parade pitch at the weekend, I hope the only thing they here from the terraces is the sound of tumble weed blowing across the empty seats. Clear the lot out, and I mean the lot!! Then we will return next year and support the shirt with a few bodies inside them that have at least some of the passion us poor sods on the terraces at Chesterfield have!! Have a great summer you city fans...As for those players get stuffed the lot of you!!

The only players that should make the squad in the final game should only be the youth players coming through and the few that are still contracted to us next season. Give them a chance to show that we can fall back on them or possibly give them a break next season. Ainge should be one of them.

Every single loanee should be sent back Monday first thing as there is not one logical reason why we should even field one of them as their job is now done (and unaccomplished). We need to have a look at what we have at our disposal for next season and build from there as the result against Millwall is irrelevant. One player we should look at is Ainge. If Brown is not given one last chance, let him walk tomorrow and I agree he is no way near as good as Sanasy or Forrest.

Wethers go???
Dropping down a division surely would cancel out another year on his ageing legs and looking at the teams, I can not really see one of them posing a threat for him. We wont win every game, but to get through him and Rickets should not be an easy task for a lot of the players in the 4th division.

Get Jacko in and maybe he will bring in a few of the players he has worked with at this level and succeeded at his first attempt. Lightning would strike twice if he came aboard. So what if he has slated City in the past, history is history, and the ones that bemoan him I am sure you guys would not be whinging as loud if he did get us promoted. Guess some of you guys have forgotten what he has done for the club in the past. I can not foresee a better alternative as somehow Sam Allardyce won't see City as the new challenge he craves.

Nicky Law undeservedly sacked, my ars3, I was a season ticket holder that seasons and it got to such a stage it actually felt like a chore going to watch City, it even got to such a stage I hated going to the matches, but stupid me paid for the lot before the first ball was kicked against Norwich. Shame we replaced him with a passionless shop window dummy.

There is one ec City player I would love to see get onto the coaching staff at VP is Jamie Lawrence, a player that threw his body on the line every single time. If he is available Julian, bring him in, I have never ever seen anyone on any pitch in any stadium have so much heart and desire as he had. He would make a good assistant.

I myself lived in Leeds and supported Bradford since 1979 my wife in Sheffield (Yes Bradford supporter) until 2001. Leave of Dave S. it's not the supporters or where they are from its up to the players and management down at CITY. If they can't get that sorted out then it will be the conference league.

Im probably gonna take a bit of abuse for saying this BUT i have to feel sorry for Leeds almost as much as I do for Bradford.
All the Yorkshrie clubs are suffering financially, and why's that? Its the big coats in the capital that try and drain it fromt he rest of us. You trying to say that if Yorkshire was as highly "paid" as the southerners that Leeds would be in League 1, City, League 2, york and Halifax... nearly gone for good... 50% of Yorkshrie teams dont even own their own stadiums!

I have ONE person to blame for the plight of the bantams however... JACK TORDOFF!! why? because he has let his pride come first... Ok many moons ago he got abused by the city fans for not putting the money in when it counted in the play-offs.. But he's "honarary life president", who sits there with MILLIONS in the bank and ever increasing.. "bradford city is my life", yet when we needed that little "injection" when G.Richmond stole from us.. where was Tordoff.... sitting on his backside... If you had the millions of JT... would you be happy seeing "YOUR CLUB" in such aplight knowing you COULD do something about it!? i dont mean be chairman again.. i mean help out Julian!

there is a strong rumour here that BIG SAM has been house hunting in your area for the past couple of weeks---- not to become your manager but to take over the club lock stock and barrel.

he would then do a Sunderland type job employing a couple of his old Bolton cronies but possibly some of his younger coaches.

Big Sam NEEDS A big challenge and nothing comes bigger than lifting you from the bottom upwards again!!!

Spineless, Gutless! The team went down with no fight no spirit! Wethers is past it but he has been a great servant to our club so would like him to stay on in some capacity. I hope Julian makes a shrewd appointment and stops bringing in loan players who clearly have not been up for the fight in recent games. Bring in some free transfers and sign doyle n holmes with some of the money coming in from the season ticket scheme. I know we have had some good loan players in the past but my feeling is if they were our players they would of shown more fight, desire and bottle when the going got tough! On new manager what about taking a chance on someone like Lee Sinnott? an up and coming manager with something to prove rather than a failing manager looking for another chance!

Dave S, there is no hint of hatred in my comments. For many football supporters, supporting their local team allows them to express a pride in their roots and share in the community in which they live. I may be wrong, but I would suggest that you yourself share this view in part, or else why would you be sympathetic to West Yorkshire clubs; why not Southampton or Newcastle, for example. I also think most football supporters understand the rivalry between neighbouring clubs; West Brom vs Wolves, Arsenal vs Tottenham etc. (It's not just football by the way; if Bradford Cathedral Choir were in an 'hymn off' with Leeds Cathedral Choir, guess what, I'd want Bradford to win!) The joy in beating such a rival is that, until the teams meet again, your team, and by extention your community, are the top dogs in your region. Good healthy stuff, surely? My particular gripe is with those supporters from Bradford who turn their backs on their home city and channel their support, including financial support, into their home city's greatest rival. This is to the detriment of my club and my community, and frankly I think it stinks.
And by the way, this isn't a lecture, I'm simply sharing my view. And if this isn't the forum for sharing views then please could you let me know where is?

According to figs in the T&A last week up at @ 30/6/07 city will have lost over £3 million since the second admin. To service a debt of this amount will cost at least 180k a year.
Stadium rent unless deffered is £300k a year so thats almost
half a million down before a ball is kicked. The 7000 season tickets would bring in approx 1.5 million with juniors if we are lucky and match day tickets will have to be a lowish price to attract non ticket holders. Sorry to paint such a gloomy picture but if anyone can tell me how the club is to survive with ongoing mounting losses I would be pleased to hear ideas. The horsfall here we come comment is not far off the mark. We would be debt free and fill the ground every week and be a club to invest in. We could make it back and be financialy sound. Well done to all the city supporters this year for really getting behind the team, some of the players need to have a long hard look at themselves.

How do we re-kindle the spirit - how do we get people who really want to play for Bradford City?
Answer this and we're in business - fail to do so will mean a committed and loyal, albeit disallusioned, fan base, and a group of individual players doing anything to keep in professional football.
Quite simply we took a calculated risk forced on us by financial restraints. In order get and save money we risked our division 1 status and we are now paying the price!

We took a risk? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

well maybe but as I see it if the so called risk had not been taken wages for players would not have been paid and we could therefore have been in breach of FA Regulations-- maybe there would have been points docked or some other punishment. Having regard to previous administrations etc then that could have been horrendous.

Now tell me if you were a Hull director would you send Windass back at the end of the seaon so that City pick up the wages bill and then sign him again just before the start of the new season or would you make the deal permanent now!!!

If Hull send him back for the summer those wages have to be met!!!

I for one think David will keep the job as manager, and he is probably the best hope we have. Who will want to come to Bradford? Instead of spending lots of money trying to get an experianced manager, spend the money and wages on some players so the team can have consistancy. David had been at the club years, understands the situation, and his love for the club should allow him to accept a lower paid contract than many managers giving him the expericance he wants. Give him a 6 month rolling contract, so in the event of a management change in the second part of the season Bradford don't have a massive pay out.

I for one think David will keep the job as manager, and he is probably the best hope we have. Who will want to come to Bradford? Instead of spending lots of money trying to get an experianced manager, spend the money and wages on some players so the team can have consistancy. I came here to Ireland in 1966 and have been a city supporter all my life.I too have also been a leeds supporter. When asked as a youngster who I supportered, the question was always Bradford who? In Ireland the big names were always Arsenal, Chelsea,MaxxxxUtd and of course Leeds Utd. City & LU were always the 1st results I looked for.For both teams the answer is to fire the whole team and start again with players who will show some pride in playing for their repective clubs. Both clubs need investors, and quickly, or it might be freefall next season. Give the ex-pats a bit of slack. We cant get to see the clubs play. C'mon City.

Give him a 6 month rolling contract?????

You want us relegated by the new year? He has just been in charge for over 2 months and in that time has shown less tactical knowledge than my son playing Championship Manager. As a manager he has been a disgrace.

He brought in Youga and played him in every defensive position he could. He kept Parker and despite his oh so obvious failures playing in midfield, he still insisted on playing him there. He signed Barrau to play on the left and despite his 'exciting' and 'consistent crossing' tags, we saw him for no more than 10 minutes. The only striker (other than Deano) to have looked like scoring regularly for us this season was Dyer. He didn't get a game under Wethers and the goals never came. Then you have Schuey and MBW who clearly showed they struggle when in the same side. Did he change it and give Penford and/or Bentham a run in the side as replacements? No he didn't. Then we keep Hibbert on the books for nearly 6 weeks despite him being injured with a back injury. Then we send him back once he had recovered. Where's the logic in that??? Talking of logic, he brings back Muirhead and doesn't even give him a go despite the performances of Colbeck, Parker and Daley on the wings. Masterstroke!!!!

So if anyone else wants to stick up for the useless cretin of a Manager, let me know why. As I said previously, he has done his time at the club. Now is time to let him leave, save on the wages and give Ainge a run.
