JAMES Ickringill, son of Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club head coach Simon, and teenage clubmate Euan Wilson-Baig have safely come through qualifying in the Aegon British Tour event at the Stourton Road venue.

The unseeded Ickringill defeated Benjamin Dean 6-1, 6-2, fifth seed Elliott Farmer 6-4, 6-3 and 15th seed Christopher Wood 6-3, 6-1 to reach the first-round proper of the tier-two event.

Wilson-Baig, who is only 15, had a tough initial encounter before beating Joshua Wilson 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 ahead of slightly more comfortable outings against sixth seed Ingimar Tomasson 6-4, 7-6 and Luke Thompson 6-2, 7-5.

However, Ickringill's club doubles partner Cameron Malik could not join him, despite being top seed in the men's qualifying.

After a first-round bye, Malik beat Andre Earnshaw 6-3, 6-4 before losing his final qualifying-round clash against tenth seed Daniel Bennett 6-7, 6-2, 10-3.

Ickringill had a first-round match against Lucas Taylor, while Wilson-Baig faced Mark Rushton-Woods.

Top seed in the main draw is 2014 semi-finalist Peter Ashley from Cookridge, while at the bottom of the draw is defending champion and second seed Clay Crawford from Leeds, who would meet Wilson-Baig if both win their first-round matches.

In the women's singles qualifying, Baildon's Alice Copland lost 6-0, 6-2 in the first round to Maria Pandya.

Second seed in the women's singles proper is Bradford's Serena Nash.

The tournament has been hit by rain so far and referee Peter Finn said: "We haven't had any play so far on the grass courts but the British Tour has dominated the indoor courts and the outdoor hard courts, so we are on schedule there.

"We are running a bit behind with the Investec Ilkley Open but if we get on the grass courts onwards from today, we will catch up by the weekend."

The women's final is scheduled for noon on Saturday and the men's singles final for 2pm, with the times for the doubles finals still to be arranged.
