PHIL Parkinson insists there is plenty still to be done as his City rebuild continued with a third signing.

Versatile Tony McMahon ended a busy first week of pre-season by joining new faces Steve Davies and Josh Morris at Apperley Bridge.

McMahon, who finished last season on loan at Valley Parade, penned a two-year deal. His ability to play different positions will offer more depth to Parkinson’s squad.

The City boss is also waiting to get answers from another couple of targets as he presses on with his recruitment plans.

Parkinson said: “We’re trying to piece it together. Tony is another piece in the jigsaw but we’ve still got a bit of work to do.

“I’ve had a few meetings with other players and there are one or two offers on the table. We’re just waiting to hear back.

“You can never tell how long those things take but it’s only the first week of pre-season. A lot of teams aren’t back until next week and we’ve got over a month to the first game.

“We’ve signed three so far and we’re still looking.”

McMahon is a familiar figure within the squad after impressing during his initial stint from Blackpool. He played eight times, starting the last four games of the season, and scored in the 3-0 win at Doncaster on Good Friday.

The 29-year-old can operate in different midfield roles and at the back – and Parkinson believes his lack of a regular position can benefit the team.

“That’s the beauty of him,” he added. “The squad we have is not going to be the biggest in the division by any stretch, so having that kind of versatility is really important.

“He played midfield for us last season and did really well there but he’s equally comfortable in centre midfield or at full back.

“It took him a while to get in the team but obviously the lads had done well up to a point.

“But he brought a lot of qualities to the training ground and has got that football intelligence.

“It’s important to get good professionals into the club and he’s been a captain before. He’s a leader and has real confidence in his own ability.

“I wanted to bring him here. It’s taken a while but we’re delighted to have got it done.”

Parkinson has been pleased with the opening week of the pre-season programme and the way the players have coped with the soaring temperatures.

“It’s been hot. But the first few weeks of the season might be hot.

“The new lads have fitted in well so far. Steve’s a bit behind, as we expected, but we’ve got plenty of time with him to make sure he’s right for the first game.”
