CLAYTON Golf Club trio John McGann, Scott Smith and Damien Cope are set to raise over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Smith, club captain McGann and club secretary Cope raised the money by playing 72 holes on one day.

Cope said: "We teed off at 5.15am on a near-perfect day. We very nearly ran round the first 18 holes, had a quick pit stop and then rattled off the next 18.

"The hardest round was the third but we had some support from some members to gee us along.

"The last round was also hard work as by then our feet and legs were aching a bit.

"We completed the challenge at 5.30pm, so it took just over 12 hours.

"There were shots going left, shots going right, one or two even went straight! There were ten birdies between us, lots of pars and many bogeys!"

Cope added: "Plenty of fruit and sandwiches were eaten, along with gallons of water (and when we finished, a few beers).

"We were elated when we finished and were all surprised how well we felt considering that we had each walked 23.4 miles, burnt around 6,000 calories and between us hit over 1000 shots!

"We are yet to have a final tally but we are on course to raise over £1,000 for Macmillan.

"Anyone who still wishes to sponsor us can do so at justgiving.com/teams/claytonshappyhookers.

"We will definitely do it again next year, and have even spoken about trying to run or jog it in the future!

"The old bones were aching a bit last Sunday but nowhere near as much as the day after playing rugby for Wibsey and Bradford Salem!"
