DAN McLay (Bretagne Seche Environnement) took first blood in the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series, sprinting to victory in the Otley Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old from Leicester was part of a large group of riders which broke away in the later stages of the race, which attracted an estimated 10,000 crowd.

Just as the 100 Per Cent ME team were teeing up the win for Chris Latham, McLay popped through to snatch victory, leaving Latham second and Jon Mould (One Pro Cycling) third.

Burley-in-Wharfedale’s Scott Thwaites had to settle for fifth place – the same finishing position he claimed in the National Championships road race in Lincoln three days earlier.

Despite being one of the older riders, Keighley’s Tom Barras produced a fine display for NFTO, finishing 16th.

McLay said: “I thought it was going to be more of a fight than it was but I think Latham just eased up maybe ten metres too soon and made it easy to slide through and I just had to make sure I had enough space to get my hands up in the air.

“I’ve always wanted to win here because I reckon it’s the best last corner in cycling!”

Annasley Park (Giordana Triton) raced to victory in the Pinsent Masons Women’s Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old from Hereford took the win in a two-up sprint with Dame Sarah Storey after the pair had been clear of the chasing bunch for much of the 11-lap race.

The evening also saw various junior age group races, a men’s amateur race and even an opportunity for under-fives to ride balanced bikes.
