KEIGHLEY boxer Muhammad Ali added another notch to his belt by claiming his first senior GB Elite Three Nations crown.

Having clinched the English title last month, the 18-year-old proved himself the best of British in the amateur flyweight category at Rotherham.

He beat Welsh opponent Wesley Davies on a unanimous points verdict before seeing off Scotland's Matthew McHale with a second-round stoppage.

It was the ideal confidence-booster ahead of the European Games in Azerbaijan next month.

Ali said: "I was up against the best from Scotland and Wales and I felt I dealt with them pretty easily.

"It's good to get some fights in for sharpness and good preparation for the European Games, though my opponents will be a lot tougher."

The Bury Amateur Boxing Club member earned the 52kg slot in the nine-man Great Britain squad for the inaugural event in Baku after claiming his first senior national title at Liverpool Echo Arena.

He travels to Germany for a training camp on Saturday before flying to Azerbaijan on June 8 with his eyes set on a podium finish.

"Obviously I'm aiming for gold but I want to at least come away with a bronze," said Ali, who is hoping to win a GB spot in the Rio Olympics next year.

"It's my first senior international tournament so I don't know what to expect. But if I can win a medal that means I qualify for the World Championships (in Doha this October)."

Ali has already enjoyed success on the global stage at youth level, having earned a World Championship silver and a Youth Olympics bronze.
