SKIPPER Alan Archibald has vowed Partick Thistle will take revenge on Queen of the South at Firhill in tomorrow night's Co-operative Cup second-round clash.

Jags went down 1-0 against Queens at Palmerston Park in the Irn-Bru First Division - a defeat that means Ian McCall's side have failed to win any of their opening three league games.

Worryingly, the Firhill men have only managed to score once in these opening three fixtures, but Archibald is determined his mates will put things right at the first attempt tomorrow night.

He said: "We just want to put things right and tomorrow night we will be champing at the bit to beat Queens.

"It is definitely a benefit that we have the quick turnaround and the chance to get Saturday out of our systems."

But Archie admitted that Thistle must start translating their free-scoring cup form into league goals.

The Jags captain said: "We have to start finding the net though, and it is frustrating after having scored six goals last midweek, albeit against lower-league opposition, to have failed to find the net at Palmerston.

"But we are not going to start worrying just yet. We played some good football down there and just did not get our reward."

Archie added: "We dominated possession in the first half and created the better chances, but failed to take them and, in a tight game like Saturday's, that is always going to be crucial.

"But we have the chance to bounce back tomorrow and we must take it."

With Thistle opting for a three-pronged strike force with Jim Hamilton, Kris Doolan and Marc Corcoran at the apex, boss McCall certainly could not be faulted for his positive intent at Dumfries.

And Corcoran, who was substituted at half-time, should have put Partick in front early on.

However, although the visitors brought Liam Buchanan on in the second half, the Firhill men were far from sharp up front.

Five and six-goal defeats of Berwick and Forfar in cup competition are one thing, but a one- goal return from three league outings can only be described as worrying.

Yet, in 24 minutes, Partick were first to threaten and Ludovic Roy produced a fine stop to deny Corcoran eight yards out.

The home side's response was swift and Steve Tosh's cross was headed against Jonny Tuffey's upright with the Partick keeper beaten just before the half-hour mark.

Within the opening minute of the second period, Queens passed up on another fine chance when Tosh picked out Bob Harris, but Tuffey brilliantly smothered his six-yard strike.

As play ebbed and flowed after the break, Queens keeper Roy was the busier of the two custodians, but the breakthrough came at the visiting end.

Seven minutes from time Derek Holmes put substitute David Weatherston in behind the Thistle defence and he buried low underneath Tuffey to leave the visitors stunned.

But McCall said: "It will be just as tight tomorrow night and hopefully we can make the extra width at Firhill count.

"But it is a big game for both sides as the winner has the chance to draw a big-name side and earn some money.

"So I think it is a big plus for us we have the chance to face Queens again so quickly."

It is too early to forecast doom and gloom, but this Saturday's visit of Morton has already taken on extra significance because of what has gone before.

In short, three points are a must.
