Nigel Martyn is doing old pal David Wetherall a favour by helping City's goalkeepers.

The former England and Leeds stopper comes in to training once a week to work with Donovan Ricketts and Russell Howarth.

Martyn, 40, played 847 games, including 23 internationals, in a hugely-successful career and Wetherall hopes City's keepers can tap into that knowledge.

Wetherall said: "Nigel's not only got the expertise but he also has a modern way of thinking about goalkeeping.

"I remember him saying that he really got into the technical side of it at 33, an age when most players would be stuck in their ways and winding down. He attributed that and hard work to him playing at the level he did for as long as he did.

"Jim Montgomery is still with us as well but Nigel is going on a slightly different tack, so hopefully the keepers are getting a rounded approach to their training.

"It is a specialised area so I'm delighted that he is helping us out."

Martyn played his final game for Everton only 14 months ago in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Goodison.

But Wetherall has ruled out the possibility of Martyn coming out of retirement for City in an emergency, as Neville Southall did famously in a televised clash with Leeds.

He laughed: "There's no chance of Nigel being a slightly trimmer Neville Southall because his ankles aren't up to it! He can't even kick a ball on the training ground."
