McCall for City boss? Forget it, says Todd

Colin Todd has warned City fans to forget their dream of cult hero Stuart McCall taking charge.

McCall is the overwhelming choice of the supporters to come back as manager.

Why would Stuart McCall want to leave Sheffield United? Somewhere along the line he wants to go into management but would the football club as it is now be right for him?

Colin Todd

But Todd, sacked eight days ago, reckons it is not going to happen.

"Supporters, and the media as well, have got to get real," he said. "You have all these names bandied about but you must look at the situation the club are in.

"Why would Stuart McCall want to leave Sheffield United? Somewhere along the line he wants to go into management but would the football club as it is now be right for him?

"He would want to go somewhere where there is money to spend on players. And he'll want to know if the squad is there to help him go in the right direction.

"I'm sure Julian Rhodes would love to make a big appointment like McCall but it's impossible, unless he goes down another route and puts even more money in - but he can't keep bankrolling everything.

"You look at Bradford and there is no stability. They might have a big stadium but, whatever people think, they are not a big club and have to earn the right to be where they want to be.

"You can't keep looking back and say Bradford were in the Premiership six years ago because that means nothing. Supporters have to realise the position the club are in now."

Stan Ternent, Andy Ritchie and Keith Alexander are names in the frame to replace Todd as well as crowd favourite Peter Beagrie. Frank Stapleton and former Leeds coach John Carver have also declared an interest.

Todd added: "Somebody currently out of work with a lesser profile would accept the job but I cannot see any so-called bigger names being interested. People like that want the finance available to restructure the club and that isn't going to happen."

Todd sorted out a severance deal with Rhodes on Friday and insists they parted on amicable terms.

"My time at the club was a challenge but an enjoyable one and I've liked working with a chairman who wants to take the club forward. He has got the club at heart and I wish him every success in the future.

"I'm disappointed but not angry at what's happened. I've been in management before and you learn to live with it.

"I was probably more relieved than anything because I knew it would be another tall order this summer to build again.

"There's never a good time to get the sack but maybe Julian felt a change of direction might be needed.

"I've said all along that they are good enough to stay up and my opinion hasn't changed. A lot of the remaining 13 games are against teams around them so it is in their own hands.

"Losing to Crewe was disappointing but it's not a time to panic. As the manager, you have to make sure that any tension does not get through to the players and you keep them positive."

Todd spent the weekend looking after his grandchildren and plans to take some time recharging the batteries. But he has not ruled out one more shot at management.

And he hopes any future employer will offer something he never had at the Intersonic Stadium - squad stability.

"I've had to wheel and deal all the time and the last two pre-seasons have been spent scratching my head looking for players. It would have been lovely to be in the position where you only needed to add one or two more to the squad. That wasn't the case.

"But I've got no problem with Julian whatsoever. He has had a huge burden on his shoulders taking the club through the dark days and should be applauded for that.

"But I just think there needs to be a reality check in terms of where the football club can go."

Come on Todd, just because you were sacked by the club doesn't mean that you can continue to slag us off. You wouldn't talk to the press when you were in charge so why now? Whats up was Chester Le Street Jobcentre busy today so you couldn't sign on? Go back to watching Jeremy Kyle and Trisha and come back when you have something decent to say!

Todd is right in some ways. Some City fans need a reality check. We will not go down, but I think we would be foolish to think we will be promoted in the next few seasons. I can only see us having mid-table League 1 finishes for the next few seasons whislt the club's financial position remains as it is.

Can the T&A stop publishing the spiteful comments of a sacked manager. Not one Premier League or Championship side would give Stuart McCall the manager's job so why wouldn't he want to come back to a club with massive potantial. Hardly anyone takes over a new club with them riding high.
Oh and another thing, get lost Todd.

"CITY TILL I DIE"
"COME ON CITY" we shout and god we mean it. Unlike Todd!

He calls his self a professional - don't think so, he's shown himself in his true colours! I am sure no club will want him as manager. I wish him well in his future career - NOT!! He's done us a favour, the door is now open to someone who does believe in 'Our City' and feels what we feel when we sing "City till I die".

STUART FOR MANAGER - .....never say never!

Before anyone starts I'm a die hard city fan so don't question my loyalty.

So many of you have taken offence because somebody speaks the truth. Lets look at the facts:

Is Bradford City the right move for Stuart McCall at this moment in time? No money and only 6 players on the clubs books in the summer. Talk about jumping in the deep end; would McCall really want this task? I hope he does but I have my suspician that he wont come.

He's right, we have a big stadium and were playing Premiership football 6 years ago. Does that make us a big club? Answer no it doesn't.

It is highly likely that a smaller profile manager would take charge of the club due to financial reasons and a lack of squad. Again Todd speaks the truth.

He's praised the chairman and so he should. He stated he's enjoyed the challenge he's faced. Nobody can deny he's had an extremely tough job. He's been successful in part but due to his and the clubs play-off ambitions this season he's fallen on his own sword.

Afew harsh words from Todd. So what, it's the truth I don't take peronsal offence to it. Maybe that's because i'm realistic.

I guess there's a lesson in all of this. The truth hurts, learn to deal with it instead of taking it as a personal insult.

Granted reading the comments about players but I believe that Stuart knows enough people in the game to get decent loan players. Expect a few blade youngsters as well as Rangers lads may be in his plans if he came HOME. This is the best time to take over City, It is only the worst if you cannot improve.

Its a sad truth that Todd is only stating the facts. It is very hard to be positive about the future of Bradford City at the moment in fact it is hatrd to be positive about lower league football in general. The money in the Premier League is killing English football from the bottom up. Julian Rhodes cannot keep bankrolling Bradford City there has to be new investment in the club but sadly we are not Premier league and glamorous so I am afraid there will be no mutli millionaire americans or oil rich Saudi's turning up at Valley Parade with large cheque books. I seriuosuly fear for the future of the club. Julian Rhosed is offering the cheapest season ticket in the league next season if 10,000 will pledge 2-3 weeks into this campaign 3,000 have signed up! If the people of Bradford want their club - 10,000 would have signed up in the first week. Sadly the football supporters of Bradford are now Chelsea/Aresenal/Man U fans and they buy their season tickets every year except nowadays they its called a Sky TV package!
I was never Colin Todd's biggest fan but I could see the constraints he was working under. Please dont critise him for telling the truth somebody had to

I would like to disagree on a few points - free country and all that...

I am sure I speak for hundreds of fans, in response to why have "so many of us taken offence when somebody (Todd) speaks the truth?"

The reason is, it is your personal opinion (which you are entitled to) that Todd was telling the truth.

Yes in some respects we are not a big club and times have been better, a lot better but isnt it a fact that clubs employ a manager, to manage the club with a view to at the very least staying in that league, but with the aim to finish the season towards the top of the league.

What has happened to City - are we going up? No, we are going down.

If its not the managers fault whose fault is it?

Of course Todd said he'd enjoyed his time with City, thanking the chairman and Julian Rhodes, he wants to appear to have no grudge, clever. Get the niceties over with and then stab Wethers in the back. Nice one Todd. What a gentleman.

Congratulations James, you are a realist.

In everyday life, when people take offence at insults, all its saying is that they feel so passionate about whatever the issue is.
There is no law against this and people are entitled to their opinions as are you.

Maybe there is a lession to learn from all this James, Todds comments do hurt yes and and we have dealt with it. HAVE YOU?

Oh, all the comments re Stuart McCall, we are all just dreaming, dont take things so much to heart James. People are just airing their views 'getting it off their chest. Its finished. Move on.

There is no reason for the complete hatred of Todd. He has done an admirable job under difficult circumstances. And now he is gone. Don't hate the guy for it. He did his best but it didn't work out.
And to be honest, some of the people here can't spell or use proper punctuation, and that leads me to believe they are kids who have no idea what is involved in running a football club.

Half of the people commenting on this thread seem to be absolute morons who probably only started supporting city in 1999 following the success. There is no chance Mcall is going to come here from a premiership club in order to destroy his playing reputation with no money, a terrible squad and now apparently heading for relegation. There have been people saying Ian Dowie was going to come here and Kevin Blackwell. Its as though we just have to choose who we want.Get real - you all slag Todd off but where has sacking him got us? I am sure it will send us down. Don't forget he was on the lowest wages in the league and even went without pay at times. Anyone can be a great manager given 10 million to spend. The only people who will come here are big names who have not managed in Donkeys years or new managers looking to make a name - Keith Alexander might be our best (or only) bet.

Todd did his best given the circumstances.I hope all thes fans commenting on the situation are paying there money and supporting the club because its all about money and if we ever needed support its now.If we can get bigger attendances we get more revenue and can then afford permanent players instead of surviving on loan deals.

Todd had his chance to turn things around at City and failed miserably, through bad man-management & poor decision making. His negative attitude to both the way we played and the clubs loyal supporters was bad enough, but to attempt to undermine Wetherall's position at every given opportunity, is a disgrace.

Who is this man to question whether Macca would want to come back? He has already stated his desire to leave Sheffield Utd to pursue a management career, when his current contract expires this summer. It also costs nothing for JR to give him an interview along with all the others, and lay it on the line as to what the restraints are at VP. I'm sure that Todd's continual bleating about our finances throughout his tenure have not gone unoticed by any potential future manager, and I'm sure that anyone coming in to speak to JR in the next few weeks will do so with their eyes and ears wide open to these facts. So yes, in reality, we may end up with the 'lesser' option, but as long as they either have an real affinity with the Bantams, or some belief and determination in them, then so be it.

When Todd was in charge, he never stopped carping on about the clubs precarious position, and we are still getting it even though he has left! We are not a bunch of morons, you sad fossil. We are all fully aware that the club is still on the financial brink, and that relegation could be the worst thing to happen. However, the question is - which (ex)manager dragged us into this dogfight through a general lack of ideas, tactical ineptness & motivational skills? That would be you Mr Todd!

There is no doubt that despite our lack of finances, and that fact that you have been one of the most disrespectful and tactically woeful managers in our history, you will have agreed a nice severance package that will keep you in the finest malt whiskey long into your retirement. You had your chance and you blew it, along with your right to keep moaning about it.

Please, therefore, can the T&A make these the last comments printed from this footballing dinosaur.

The hatred of Todd was brought on himself with his derogatory comments about all and sundry involved with the club, himself apart. If it wasn't the fans then it was certain named individuals (how many other managers single players out to the media), if it wasn't that it was always something else not the fact he only ever made one positive substitution in his whole 3 years at the club. On appointing a new manager, whats the rush? Why not let Wethers have a crack, he has Frank Barlow down there with him as an old head and he has seen just about everything in football he needs to have knowledge on running our club from the touchline, not to mention knowing the club inside out and having a massive feeling for us too. Remember it was he who liased between players/board/administrators when the chips were down before with no real need to apart from genuine love and affection. That is the type of guy I'd like to be in charge, McCall would be just as untried in this situation as he has no managerial experience and only coached at a progressive club. The other point about Stuart is that if he did come now, or at the season's end and failed, the legend would be blown out of the water and the chance of him returning like a Messaih when the club is more stable would then never happen.

Nothing that Colin Todd now does or says has any relevence to the future of our club, so if he wants to make comment - let him!! What does it change? Nothing!!! The reality is that the club is in a very precarious position, and what the T&A should be doing is printing the message loud and clear everyday that JR's cheap season ticket idea (Which is fantastic) is not gathering momentum like it should, and they should be encouraging the city of Bradford people every single day to get on board. But as an even more urgent matter - its this season that we must focus on, so why not just open the stadium for FREE and encourage everyone to get inside VP and cheer the boys on till the end of the season - seems like whethers and the troops could do with the 12th Man now, not next season. Sorry to the season ticket holders who have paid up already, but i'm sure you would rather have the vocal support behind the team for the remainder of this season.

The problem with letting in people for free is that when things go wrong on the pitch - ie one stray pass from a youngster, eg Joe Colbeck, or we are playing very well but happen to fall behind, is that these "fans" who only ever to bother coming when it's free or cheap start booing.
This winds up all the proper fans who go every week or to most games, not just when there's a big team in town or a freebie on offer.
This booing does nothing for the players on the pitch and winds everyone up.

I take your point Paul, but on the other hand if we manage to win a few matches under Wethers stewardship, then these same people may pledge and buy a season ticket for next year - Just trying to be positive for the club - everyone seems so pessimistic all the time. Lets do all we can to avoid the drop and look forward to the REAL west yorkshire derby with LEEDS next year (Sorry Hudds fans but your not as significant as you think)
