CAMPION new boy Joel Hughes helped them notch a crucial victory in the West Riding County Amateur League.

The Manningham-based club were facing Ovenden West Riding in a Premier Division clash at Natty Lane, with both teams unbeaten in all fixtures since early December.

However, Campion – on the back of a goal in each half from experienced match-day signing Hughes, who has been playing for Fforde Grene in the Leeds Sunday League – won 2-0 to maintain second place.

Leaders Golcar United moved ever closer to the championship with a 6-0 home win over strugglers Littletown, while third-placed Bay Athletic – who have played two games less than Campion – stayed three points adrift after beating Kirkburton 5-1, with Daniel Naidole netting a hat-trick.

At the foot of the table, Tyersal halted a run of six consecutive defeats with a 2-2 draw at home to fellow strugglers Halifax Irish, with Lee McEwen on target in each half for Tyersal as Jacob Travis and Gareth Sherwood replied.

Hunsworth edged a step closer to keeping their top-flight status with a hard-earned point from a 1-1 draw at second-bottom Huddersfield YMCA.

Lower Hopton, who were knocked out of the Premier Division Cup by Campion in midweek, bounced back to take all three points off hosts Salts with a 3-0 victory.

Division One front-runners Dudley Hill Rangers were without a fixture and could only look on as both Wakefield City and Ventus-Yeadon Celtic climbed above them with victories that moved them into joint-leadership.

Campion Reserves, who are bottom, netted three times through Chris Helliwell, Lincoln Donaldson and Aaron Metcalfe against Wakefield but were punished as Rob Bloomfield (3), Ryan Barker (2), Ryan Southward and Conor Glavin netted to secure a 7-3 victory.

Ventus, who have played three more games than Wakefield, returned to winning ways with a 2-1 home victory over Wibsey, with Billy Swiatek scoring both goals and James Crossland getting the consolation.

A Lee Smith goal for Bradford Horton Sports was insufficient to save his side from a 4-1 home defeat against Westbrook YMCA, while Steeton Reserves are only two points above the second relegation spot after losing 3-1 at Lepton Highlanders.

Salts Reserves pulled themselves off the bottom of Division Two with a 6-0 romp at Littletown Reserves, with Adam Hussain and Richard Magson both scoring two goals to add to Andy Howland and Ryan Whitfield strikes.

Steeton booked their Keighley & District FA Challenge Cup final place with a 1-0 victory over Wilsden Athletic and will meet Oxenhope Recreation, who had a 5-0 victory over Silsden Whitestar.

Salts will play Oxenhope Rec in the semi-finals of the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup on Thursday, April 2.

The Saltaire club were due to have played Settle United, who beat Oxenhope Rec in the quarter-finals but were removed after they fielded an ineligible player.
