YORKSHIRE’S Jack Brooks insists he can better his stunning performances from last year’s County Championship-winning campaign in 2015, although he accepts it will be tough.

Brooks has revealed that the only personal wickets target he ever sets himself at the start of a summer is to reach 50 in the Championship, which he achieved for the first time in 2014.

In fact, he sailed beyond that and ended up with 68 victims, a tally only bettered by Sussex bowler Steve Magoffin.

Brooks, currently touring South Africa with the England Lions, is also confident the White Rose make this one another trophy-winning summer.

“I know what I can achieve, having set the bar last season, and you want to get better,” said the former Northamptonshire fast bowler.

“I have set myself little targets but I won’t get too far ahead with a number of wickets.

“I never set a target for that apart from aiming for 50, which is a benchmark.

“I don’t think there will be any more pressure on me than normal.

“I put a lot on myself anyway – more than I feel from the outside, be it from coaches, the media or supporters.

“It’s going to be hard to do better than last season, but I’m good enough to do it as long as I keep myself fit. It promises to be a very exciting year. Hopefully, we’ll start the season well and give it a good go.

“We’re certainly good enough to win trophies, not just in the four-day stuff.”

Brooks shares the new ball at Yorkshire with Ryan Sidebottom, a player he has looked up to throughout his career.

And Sidebottom is backing him to return from South Africa, where he has taken three wickets in two matches, a better bowler.

“I’d like to think so,” said the left-armer. “I’m sure he’ll come back stronger and fitter, most definitely.

“I think when you go away with England, you take stock of where you’re at, but you have to make sure you stick to what has worked for you.

“You can fall into the trap of having England in your mind and then forget about what you’ve done well to get in that position.”

The Lions play their third of five one-day internationals against South Africa A in Potchefstroom today. They are 2-0 up in the series, but Brooks is yet to feature with the white ball.
