CHILDREN with disabilities will be able to enjoy an Evesham play area alongside able bodied youngsters thanks to a campaign started by a kind hearted mother of three.

Lucy Bickerstaff set up the No Limits campaign in May this year with a target of raising £10,000 to buy and install specialist disabled play equipment at the Crown Meadow park.

But after capturing the hearts of the town and even celebrity supporter Chico, who produced a brief video message backing the appeal, Mrs Bickerstaff has managed to pull in about £35,000 funding for the new area.

The project has been backed the whole way by Wychavon District Council, which is responsible for the play area, and the council's executive board has agreed to provide up to £20,000 towards the total.

Other organisations that have made contributions includes Rooftop Housing, John Martins Charity, MENCAP and the Evesham Roundtable.

Mrs Bickerstaff said: "I started the facebook page because I saw a child who moved with the aid of a wheel chair on a special swing on a television programme and instantly thought Evesham need's this.

"So I started a facebook page to get interest, which grew to over 1,500 likes. The rest is history. I have met a lot of lovely people this year and appreciate that so many others have agreed that these play facilities are needed.

"I called it 'No Limits' because a child's imagination has no limits and neither should their ability to play.

"I can't believe the way it's coming to an end. It will be lovely to be able to see the children all being able to play together. And because we have raised extra there is nothing we have been unable to get."

The equipment and safety surfacing will cost around £35,000 and will include a bucket swing, roundabout, sensory stimulating play equipment.

And it's hoped the play area will be able ready for the summer and in time for the return of Evesham's carnival in June.

Lynn Stevens, parks officer at Wychavon, said: "I am really delighted we will be able to help Lucy to achieve her vision and commend her for her vocal support and active fund raising so that we are able to afford this new equipment.

"I hope the work will be carried out early in the New Year so that it is ready for the summer."

The last event, a fundraising quiz night, for the campaign will take place on Friday (December 5) at Hampton Ferry from 7.30pm. It will cost £5 per person. To book a table call Hampton Ferry on 01386 45460 or Mrs Bickerstaff on 07971950263.
