BRADFORD Grammar School pupils have been racking up national medals.

Drighlington's Sophie Hobbah and Leeds' Ciara Schlosshan won silverware at the British National Championships in Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Leeds' Johnathan Milner and Guiseley's Rebecca Clynes were prolific at the British Gas Swim Wales Summer Nationals in Swansea.

Fulneck pupil Sophie, 13, was the overall champion in her age group, while Ciara won silver medals in the 100 metres and 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 100m backstroke.

Ciara said: “The Nationals was a great experience and, though it was hard, I was pleased to finish the season on a high.”

Johnathan, 16, took golds in the 50m and 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 200m medley relay, silvers in the 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and 200m medley relay (despite competing against 18-year-olds) and bronzes in the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Rebecca won five events – the 50m and 100m breaststroke, 200m butterfly and 200m and 400m individual medley – as well as silvers in the 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the girls' ten-to-13 years 200m freestyle relay.

All four pupils train for six or seven days with City of Leeds Swimming Club at the John Charles Centre for Sport in south Leeds.

Bradford Grammar School swimming coach Brian Townsend said: “Congratulations to all four swimmers. It is a fantastic achievement.

"This is not the first time they have been on the podium and, if I may quote John Wooden (highly successful US basketball coach) – ‘Winning takes talent. To repeat it takes character’.”
