FARSLEY Celtic Juniors have suffered their first defeat of the season in the Yorkshire Amateur League.

Visitors Ealandians edged their Premier Division clash 3-2, although Juniors had plenty of chances in the first half and also had a strong penalty appeal turned down.

Second-placed Ealandians won a superb contest via James Flower and Chris Marsh in the first half – when they only carved out three opportunities – and a Wayne Crossley penalty, Andy Cooper and an own goal replying.

Luck continues to elude Grangefield Old Boys Reserves in Division One as they lost 4-0 at home to leaders Almondburians, while Gildersome Spurs Old Boys went down 5-0 at Leeds Independent in an emphatic first setback.

Goalkeeper Neil Howard scored one of Independent's goals, clearing a back-pass so cleanly that it bounced over the head of his Old Boys opposite number.

Old Batelians Reserves are off the mark in Division Two, ending the perfect record of visitors Old Collegians 5-3 chiefly thanks to two late goals in the first half which made it 4-2. Phil Bryant (3), Shaun Jackson and Jamie Smith netted for Batelians.

In contrast to their first team, Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves notched their initial win of the campaign with a 3-2 scoreline at Heckmondwike Grammar School Old Boys in a Division Three cracker in which the first goal did not arrive until the 62nd minute.

The Old Boys wasted three good chances in the first half, including missing a penalty and hitting the bar, and went behind to a Louis Surtees goal.

But Nathan-Leigh Birch-Rogerson equalised shortly afterwards and Heckmondwike went 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute.

Farsley continued to work hard and were first rewarded when Josh Humphrey netted a 79th-minute screamer, with Louis Edmonds hitting the winner three minutes from time, after which Heckmondwike again struck the woodwork.

In the first round of the Leeds & District FA Senior Cup, Grangefield Old Boys won 6-1 at Shire Academics, although only Kev Brown's 40th-minute goal for the Old Boys separated the teams at half-time.

However, they bucked up in the second half after an effective interval team talk and Matt Tomlinson netted in the 46th and 48th minutes before Shire reduced the arrears.

James Kemp (65 minutes), substitute Andy Kenyon (78) and Luke Hunter, with a thumping header, then finished the Academics off.
