Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway Club held their of the Northern Fours and Junior League on Sunday, with teams from Hull, Bury, Stockport and Astley and Tyldesley all taking part.

With excellent weather and the club's biggest turnout of juniors to date - 24 in all - it certainly showed that interest in the sport is on the up.

The Heckmondwike juniors all raced well, with 11-year-old Tom Whitwam taking maximum points and the overall lead in the under-13 series.

In the under-tens, Bella Naylor scored well with 12 points, and Declan Summersgill matched her score, Ben Summersgill scoring five points and Harvey Wells eight.

In the Northern Fours, Heckmondwike rode well, despite only having three riders after Tom Whitwam pulled out due to illness.

Darren Kent showed he still had the skill and knowledge of his home track by winning three of his five races, and Richard Wells raced well, despite taking a tumble in his first race.

Justin Naylor battled through injury and managed to finish all five races but Heckmondwike finished joint last with Astley and Tyldesley.

Scores: Heckmondwike 36 (Darren Kent 18, Richard Wells 9, Justin Naylor 8, Tom Whitham 1), Hull 48, Stockport 64, Astley & Tyldesley 36, Bury Comets 65, Bury Meteors 39.

Heckmondwike ride at Firth Park again on Sunday against Sheffield (2pm).
