Angling lines

Mixed weather over the last week has refreshed lakes and rivers, so anglers are reporting good catches from our fisheries. Double-figure barbel have been caught from the Swale at Topcliffe and trout to 4lb have fallen to fly anglers. Fishing at dusk and in the evening continues to provide good returns for club anglers.

Harrogate Council are currently considering a planning application to build a hydropower plant on Topcliffe weir. Residents have expressed many objections about the impact of the proposal on the local community. Anglers from Bradford clubs are also worried about the impact on fishing in the weir pool and more widely in the River Swale. The closing date for objections from interested parties is August 29.

BCAA membership continues to grow as news spreads about the fishing the club offers. A part-year membership, effective from September 1, is now available for £33. This can be bought only via the online shop on the website at www.bradfordcityaa.co.uk or from membership secretary Jim Munden on 07940-814431. Receipt books are now being withdrawn from agents until the 2015 yearbook is available.

The club would like to remind members that their annual meeting, which includes pie and peas, is on September 24. The club need new committee men to fill vacant places. If any member is willing to help run our thriving club, or wants to propose a new rule or rule change, they should contact Mike Briggs on 01274-684906 or bradfordcityaa@aol.com before August 31. Details of the proposals to be discussed will be e-mailed to members shortly and will also be posted on the website and forum.

WASHBURN VALLEY

The heaviest fish caught during the week was a 5lb 8oz rainbow trout by Martin Bland using black hopper. Fewston: Fishing is improving as the weather cools down. Trout are now rising to take dry fly on overcast days. Swinsty: Perch, roach and the odd chub, as well as trout, are taking trotted worm. Thruscross: Brown trout are feeding at all water depths as nymph and emerging fly are abundant. Catch details (week ending August 24) – Day ticket: Fewston 24, Swinsty 4, Thruscross (catch & return) 1; total fish caught: Fewston 104, Swinsty 9, Thruscross 5; average per rod: Fewston 4.3, Swinsty 2.25, Thruscross 5.

They are still taking lures but it is more exciting on dry fly. Swinsty: Trout are now feeding as the water cools, with perch always hungry. Thruscross: Plenty of wild brown trout can be seen feeding but the modern angler seems to prefer warm weather. LISTERHILLS AA

Competitors in the open match at Rodley had to contend with heavy boat traffic and floating weed plus a cloudburst halfway through. Winner D Stephenson landed 2lb 6oz of roach and perch, with W Barker (1lb 5oz) second and E Harrison (1lb 1loz) third. The next members' match is at Pilley's on Sunday, September 7. Juniors may fish this match free of charge for the junior trophy. Overall result of the evening series: 1 E Harrison 227 points, 2 J Harrison 191, 3 A Tabiner 78. The annual RAF Appeal Charity Open match will be held at Armley on Sunday, September 14. All entry fees go to charity. To book on contact 07484-597328. CLAYTON AC

Result of the match at Viking Fishery (20 fished): 1 Alan Haley 36lb 8oz, 2 Derek Milner 30lb 12oz, 3 Steff Armitage 30lb 4oz. Section winners: Alan Sugden, Jason Craig, Jack Hawkins, Kevin Armitage. The next match is on the F1 lake at Brafferton on Sunday, September 14. Any member not fishing should inform Jason at least a week prior to the match.

BRADFORD & DISTRICT SEA AC

Our next general meeting is on Tuesday, September 16 at the New Inn, East Bierley, starting at 8pm. Potential new members will be made most welcome. Our next trip is to Rhyl on Wednesday, September 17. There are still places left on this trip but it is proving very popular, so book early to avoid disappointment.

BRADFORD No1 AA

Tickets are still available for the Lower Aire Championships at Beal on Sunday'. Call Simon on 01274-571175 to book. Raskelf is fishing well for F1s, crucians and skimmers on meat or pellet. The River Swale at Thornton Bridge and the River Nidd at Cowthorpe are worth a visit this week for chub and barbel.

GREAT HORTON AA

Result of the Sunday match at Tollerton Ponds (Kingfisher Lake): 1 A Hillary 67lb 15oz, 2 O Hudspith 61lb 15oz, 3 P Weston 45lb 11oz, 4 T Whaling 41lb 15oz. Some good carp were caught – and many got away! Everybody caught something and 490lb of fish were landed by 15 anglers. Well fished everyone.

CENTRAL AC
