BINGLEY Harrier Jonathan Brownlee was an impressive winner of Saturday's World Triathlon Series event in Stockholm.

The former Bradford Grammar School pupil won in 57 minutes 31 seconds and was closely followed home by his brother Alistair, with nearest rival Javier Gomez failing to finish the course.

The brothers, from Bramhope, were 50 seconds ahead of third-placed Gregor Buchholz of Germany.

The world title now appears to be a straight fight between Jonathan and Spain's Gomez at the season-ending Edmonton Grand Final in Canada on September 1.

"I wanted to win as this season has not gone as well as I'd hoped," said Jonathan, who finished second behind his gold medal-winning brother at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month.

"Stockholm is a great course; that was a great race. It was perfect."

Alistair, who is out of the title race, said: "It was absolutely perfect. We gave it everything we could."

The women's race was won by the USA's Sarah Groff, in one hour three minutes.
