Ryan Sidebottom struck twice during the opening morning of Yorkshire’s LV= County Championship match against Sussex at Scarborough, with the visitors shading things by reaching lunch at 99-2 from 31 overs.
After 44 runs came inside the first nine overs following a shaky start by Yorkshire’s new-ball attack of Sidebottom and Jack Brooks, the former removed Chris Nash, caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, and forced Luke Wells to play on.
That left Sussex, who had been invited to bat, at 45-2 in the 11th, and it could have been 55-3 shortly afterwards had Lyth not held on at second slip after Craig Cachopa edged Brooks.
Cachopa and Ed Joyce have since shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 54.
Joyce will resume this afternoon on 30 and Cachopa 23.
