BRADFORD Park Avenue are unbeaten after their first two games of the new season but manager John Deacey is not getting carried away.

“It has been a steady start, but that’s all it is – a start,” said the Bradford boss.

“The boys worked hard in pre-season and they are looking fit and sharp. I think they have had some reward for that effort they put in, and that’s why it has been a solid start for us.

“But we have to build on it. Getting a point away from home and then winning a big derby game is great but it will count for nothing if we don’t back it up.

"We didn’t start well last season because of injuries and suspensions and we were playing catch-up all the time after that.”

Avenue earned their point from a first-day draw at Gloucester City by coming from behind three times. They followed that with a 2-1 win over Harrogate Town last Monday to briefly lead Vanarama Conference North.

They host Leamington tomorrow, who are just one point worse off after a loss and a midweek win.

The Brakes were stunned by Guiseley on the opening day of the season as Danny Forrest hit a spectacular goal to win the game 1-0 but they bounced back in midweek.

Deacey said: “We have started well but we’re not getting excited about it, and Leamington will be a difficult game for us.

"They beat Hednesford Town away in midweek, and Guiseley only just got past them last Saturday.

“We had a couple of tough games against them last year and they will have strengthened over the summer.

"They beat us easily in the opening game of last season and I think it was the fourth minute of stoppage time when we got the winner against them at home – tough games, both of them.”

Just two games into the season, Avenue have injury concerns, some of them stemming from the pre-season schedule.

Deacey said: “We are still without Alex (Davidson), Brad (Barraclough) and Nathan (Turner), and Jack Rea picked up a serious- looking injury on Monday.

"He has damaged his ankle and is unlikely to play but Alex will come on the bench and we will try to get him 25 to 30 minutes.

“Adam Clayton is still waiting for his operation, so in all I could have five out for this game but that’s why I pushed to get a bigger squad.”
