Will Whiteoak said his third course record in just over 12 months was his best yet after a stunning last-round 62 saw him clinch the North of England Open Amateur Youth title at Middlesbrough.

The Haworth-based golfer’s eight-under par score saw him overcome a quality field by three shots on a day when the England A manager was present.

Whiteoak broke his own club’s record at Shipley earlier this summer with a 63 and carded a new-best 62 at Monmouthshire last year in winning the Welsh Open Youth Championships.

But the 20-year-old believes his latest one surpassed those as it had come under the most pressure, with the former Oakbank School pupil coming from five shots back to triumph.

He said: “This one is the most satisfying as it came in the last round to win. All the flags were tucked away as they always are (on the last day).”

Whiteoak pipped Lindrick’s Joe Dean – a fellow Yorkshire team-mate and England A squad member – and Cumbrian Oliver Carr by three strokes, having earlier posted scores of 67, 69 and 70 before his last-round fireworks. Producing inward and outward 31s, he claimed seven birdies and an eagle at the 11th to beat the previous best at Middlesbrough by one shot.

He had some luck early on, getting up and down from the second tee at the first and then finding a clear route to the green despite finding trees at the third.

Having reached eight under by the 13th, Whiteoak admitted a potential 59 had crossed his mind and he came within fractions of more birdies at the last two holes, lipping out on 17 and shaving the hole at the last.

But he was just pleased to win a tournament which featured some of the cream of the north’s top talent and is sure to register on the national selectors’ radar.

He said: “I had some luck early on in but I’ve been a bit unlucky so far this season, so it was nice to a get good break.

“I’ve not had a spectacular season, just a steady one with some good scores.”

Asked about his chances of an England call-up, he added: “You never know as there are so many good players out there. I’ve just got to try and keep getting good results.”

Whiteoak was competing in the prestigious Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham this week.
