NILE Wilson of Pudsey was among England's golden boys as both the men and women's gymnastics teams finished on top of the podium at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The five-man English team of Wilson, Sam Oldham, Louis Smith, Kristian Thomas and Max Whitlock, who had led the way at the halfway stage on Monday night, scored a total of 266.804 points to maintain their position after today's afternoon session.

The gold medal was confirmed at the end of the competition – and England did it with one man down after Oldham suffered what was understood to be a dislocated ankle on the first piece of apparatus (the vault) on day two.

It meant they were left to compete on the parallel bars and high bar with a man down, with three scores needed on each to go towards the team total.

Pommel horse specialist Smith stepped up on the parallel bars and was bettered by Wilson and Whitlock as England's charge continued.

The final rotation saw England on the high bar, with Whitlock again sticking a clean routine as he topped the all-around qualification.

Wilson and Thomas finished off England's team medal bid with clean and high-scoring routines which secured them gold as there were no real challengers in the later session, while a strong series of vaults left Scotland with silver.

The scores from team competition also doubled up as qualification marks for individual finals, with Wilson and Whitlock both qualifying for the all-around final.

Wilson also qualified for the rings, parallel bars and high bar, while Whitlock will go in the floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar finals, Thomas in the high bar, vault and floor and Smith on the pommel horse.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Bradford wrestler Tommy Hawthorn – competing for Wales – reached the quarter-finals of the 74kg category before losing heavily to Melvin Bibo of Nigeria.

Hawthorn, whose brother Brett and dad Jimmy were both also competitive wrestlers, had cruised past Dipu Ray of Bangledesh 11-0 but then came unstuck 12-0 against Bibo.
