Alistair Brownlee made it double triathlon gold today for England on the first day of Commonwealth Games action in Glasgow.

The Olympic gold medallist from London two years ago left his brother Jonny in his wake on the run to win in Strathclyde Country Park, his younger sibling taking silver ahead of South Africa's Richard Murray in hot, sunny conditions.

Alistair, who enjoyed himself over the final few hundred metres, grabbing the hands of spectators, picked up an English flag and a Yorkshire flag on the run in to win in 1hr 48min 50sec, allowing fellow former Bradford Grammar School pupil Jonny to finish 11 seconds behind, while Murray was a further 80 seconds back.

Jonny said: "Alistair was the stronger runner but it was really, really hot out there, and now I have completed the whole set of medals."

Alistair, also a Bingley Harrier and also of Bramhope, said: "I really enjoyed it and Jonny did brilliantly.

"It is absolutely fantastic to be Commonwealth champion, and there were more Yorkshire flags out there than flags of any other country."

Their success followed the women's gold won by Jodie Stimpson and the bronze by Vicky Holland.

It makes England firm favourites for gold in the mixed team relay race on Saturday.
