Phil Parkinson's hands tied in race to sign Bradford City loan players

CITY may have to wait until the season is well under way before the squad is finalised.

Phil Parkinson is tracking the loan market to fill in the gaps and wants to have the missing pieces in place for the Valley Parade opener against Coventry on August 9.

But his hands are tied by the parent clubs of the players he is chasing – and admits the waiting could go on to the end of the transfer window three weeks later if they do not want to release anyone earlier.

Parkinson revealed that he was in regular contact with one particular target but said: "It's very much a case of teams wanting to make sure their squads are right before they let anybody go.

"Sometimes, as a manager, you want to get everyone in for the first day of pre-season. But that's not realistic.

"Then you want everything done for the first match and sometimes that doesn't happen either. It might be the end of August when those long-term loans are done.

"I'm speaking to managers all the time to see who's available. But the majority of teams are away at the moment and the players we are looking at have gone off with their clubs.

"So in the meantime, we're waiting to see if one of the trialists can step up to the plate and earn a contract. Otherwise we'll use the loan market."

Free agents Nick Arnold and Angelo Balanta have been with City in Ireland as well as out-of-contract duo Jon McLaughlin and Raffaele De Vita, whose futures remain unclear.

Parkinson said: "We'll hopefully get people in for the start of the season and I'm talking to one a lot. But we've got to make sure we get the right ones to complement what we've got.

"The core of the squad is looking decent. The attitude of the players is very good and they've got a terrific work ethic.

"There are a lot of good signs and hopefully the ones we bring in towards the end of this pre-season will give us a lift as well.

"The key thing for now is to integrate the new players with our existing ones."

Mr Parkinson has not got a easy job trying to fit a couple of players in on loan He should be given some money to spend says MRMUZZY That is all well and good my friend But the money belongs to he Directors and they do not have to give it away they do not have multi millions. Of course they could arrange a share flout but do not seem to what this. However they have put in what they can and seen City are well run and deserve credit for this Mrmuzzy would you be willing to buy shares if given the chance I Would

Lack of loan players until season starts, players already with minor injuries and no money to spend what a good start to the season. What happens if ojohnny mac says no thanks? How much is this trip to ireland costing the club?

We've been down this road before. I think money is available. There is no point in just signing players for the sake of it. I think you will find it is common place for managers to hold back for the loan market and the transfer window does not shut until the end of August anyway.

I wouldn't expect any better from you to be honest. There are a group of negative people on this message board and you are undoubtedly one of them. Whatever the topic, a miserable mindset is always available to offer the appropriate downbeat comment. Cheshire is a particularly virulent area for these people. Farsley is also a known blackspot.

Presumably those arriving already were at no cost to the club.

Not so long ago clubs used to add loan players when in the hour of need. But City now seem to be making loanees a major part of the team.
I think Parky is playing a dangerous game here and it is a shop window for anyone to see.
This goalkeeping situation is going on too lonh unless they are confident McLaughlin will sign.
And before you act like a teacher with me Peter, l do know what l'm on about.

In the grand scheme of things that wasn't a lot of money. When you factor in overspend and players bonuses for those trips there won't have been much left

If the club goes bankrupt there's no club and no team. The most important thing is that the club remains solvent and on a sound financial footing.
