BRADFORD schoolgirl Emelye O'Brien has extended her golden summer.

O'Brien, a member of the Farsley-based Leeds Karate Academy, won the cadet female kumite at the Cumbrian Open Championships, clubmate Laura Mackintosh taking bronze.

She followed that by winning the cadet female team kumite alongside Amber Bannister and Eleanor Dook, with Mackintosh and Lacie Stembridge winning bronze.

Assistant instructor Tom Little was in excellent form and won the individual senior male kumite and the team kumite with fellow A teamers Craig Williams and Zach Sharp.

In the final they faced Leeds Karate Academy B (Joe Bulmer, Ben Richardson, Tom Mitchell), while the C team (James Brown, Richard Fewkes and Andy Deane) took bronze.

Assistant instructor Ashley Scott struck gold in the senior female kumite, beating clubmate Melissa Finlay in an exciting decider, and the finalists then joinedRachel Harrison to win the female team kumite.

Brown and Williams won the adult pairs kata, beating Jordan Weatherley and Doug Hunter in the final.

Silver medals were also taken by Fewkes in the veterans' kumite, Tom Mitchell in the junior male kumite, Isaac Mitchell in the boys' kumite ten-11 years and Weatherley, Hunter and Williams in the adult team kata.

Bronze medals went to Alice Whittington in the girls' kumite ten-11 years and Sarah Howarth and Emma Quinn in the girls' 12-13 years' team kumite.

Club instructor and former world karate champion Matt Price said: "Well done to everyone who competed at this event – seven gold, seven silver and five bronze."
