Despite having international Pawel Idziorek back and Jake Wood returning to the sport after an eight-month absence, Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway Club lost their Northern League double header at their Firth Park home.

On a hot day where bodies became tired in the second match, Heckmondwike fell 76-73 to Edinburgh and 76-74 to Manchester outfit Astley & Tyldesley.

With Edinburgh's Mark Lee excluded from the first heat after tangling with home rider Richard Wells – Lee needed first aid and the match was stopped for ten minutes – Heckmondwike led for 11 of the 15 heats,

In the under-13s match, Heckmondwike fielded seven riders against only one from the visitors, although Edinburgh's Kieren Swanson scored a maximum of 16 points from four races. Heckmondwike won 64-16.

Track temperatures were soaring by the second senior race, and this time Heckmondwike managed to stay in front until Heat 12 thanks to Idziorek's maximum, and the scores were level after Heat 13, with the visitors eventually winning by two points.

Astley fielded nine riders against Heckmondwike's seven in the under-13 match, with home rider Tom Whitwam gettingg a maximum 16 from four rides in a 96-61 defeat in sweltering conditions.

Heckmondwike travel to Stockport on Sunday for their next league match but there is training continues on Wednesdays at Firth Park, Heckmondwike (7.30pm onwards).
