James Lowes granted permission to speak to Bradford Bulls

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: James Lowes is set for talks with the Bulls James Lowes is set for talks with the Bulls

James Lowes is set to hold talks with the Bulls after being granted permission to speak to the club about the current coaching vacancy.

After Francis Cummins and his assistant Lee St Hilaire were unseated on Monday, legendary former Bradford hooker Lowes told the Telegraph & Argus of his desire to land the post.

He said: “I’d like to at least sit down and talk with Marc Green to hear his plans.

“That would be the first step and it would be nice to meet with the bloke.

“But it’s obviously a job I’d love to do whether it’s now or in the future. It’s Bradford Bulls – it’s my club.”

Lowes is currently head coach of rugby union outfit Leeds Carnegie and is contracted for next season.

Carnegie issued a hands-off warning to the Bulls yesterday but today they have relented and say they “reluctantly agreed” to allow Lowes to speak to his former club.

Leeds chairman Sir Ian McGeechan said: "Following our statement yesterday regarding the speculation linking James Lowes to the vacant head coach’s position at Bradford Bulls we can confirm that James has since asked the club for permission to speak with Bradford and we therefore have reluctantly agreed to his request."

John Kear and Glenn Morrison have also emerged as strong contenders but captain Matt Diskin looks certain to take temporary charge of Friday’s home game with Hull KR.

Jimmy has got genuine credentials. H's been at Leeds, Warrington and in the England set up. Added to that he's had a great season with Leeds Rugby Union. Before everyone starts laughing and joking, just look at the success he's had since retiring from the Bulls. He's smart, has motivational skills and is a proven winner. He might be just what we need with a lacklustre, de-motivated bunch of players. Whatever the outcome of his talks with Marc Green, I hope he will at least be considered.

I am OK with Jimmy as he will definitely sort out some of the thieves taking a wage just now. The big decision would be who his assistant would be. Jimmy can't coach just by strength of character. He will need another person who can work with him. I wouldn't pick Disco as assistant as they are too similar. I would love to see Morrison with him. No player would dare miss a tackle with those two stood on the touchline when he walks off.

I think we will learn a lot about the commitment of the current owners from the coach they appoint.

If they appoint a top coach, then I would assume they would only come on board with explicit reassurances that when we are relegated, no expense will be spared to acheive promotion the following season.

That was ages ago in rugby terms. If you trawl back through the records every coach will have had a losing spell.

Jimmy will have learnt from that and his time at Rhinos. He did a great job at Leeds Carnegie by all accounts and got them to the play offs when nobody gave them a chance.

We need some pride bringing back and Jimmy Lowes has it in bucketloads.

i do wish people would be realistic with suggestions...

the reason we are in this mess is because we have no money... we will shortly be a championship club playing in front of 2-3000 at home and, on many occasions 800-900 away from home against part timers.

thoughts of noble as directoror rugby, with lowes as head coach, with morrison as assistant are comical. that would take more budget that 75% of the teams we will be up aginst next year!!

the new man will be tasked with whole new infastructue.

the club needs rebuilding. a huge line has to be drawn under this season and the more we can save this season to help support a bigger budget for next the better!!

80% of our squad will be gone. clearly not such a bad thing.

the new coach should also not be judged on this year. again, its a poisoned chalice. why would anyone want that negativty when we are already doomed? they would also not learn anything... the squad will nearly all go, the teams we will compete against completely different.

for example if it was morrison he would be much better spending the rest of this season coaching dewsbury looking at players and opposition ready for next season with us than he would be standing at odsal watching our journeymen getting thumped every week.

As much as I would love to see Jimmy and Glen take the Club forward; I doubt that Green will invest in that.

If we are only going to get one Coach which seeing as we are Championship bound is likely instead of a Director, Coach and assistant, I would like to see Glen get the job; he has done a decent job at Dewsbury and has more of an understanding of Championship rugby.

We need a proven SL coach who can rebuild the club, Noble is the best bet for the club and Green, but Green will have to put his hand in his pocket. And Noble will not take and sxxt off Green.

Lowes- great player - but not a proven head coach, yes he has been an assistant and coached Leeds C - but they are not in the Union Premiership either. And just because he is a Bulls legend doesn't make him the man for the job.

Agree with Gordon Ramsey - people need to be realistic - and the coach will need to do almost everything.

But... I expect we will go for the cheap option.
