Nottinghamshire captain Chris Read led his side’s counter-attack after losing quick wickets on the final morning as Yorkshire attempted to push for victory at Headingley.

Resuming the final morning leading by 60 on 102-2, Nottinghamshire appeared to have handed the initiative to Yorkshire by losing three wickets in nine overs.

But Read responded with an unbeaten 43 off 41 balls, including six fours and a six, to help Notts reach 215-5 at lunch, a lead of 173 runs.

The visitors had frustrated Yorkshire for 11 overs this morning before they made the first breakthrough when Steve Patterson, the pick of the attack with an opening spell of 9-4-14-2, halted their progress.

Patterson claimed two wickets in an over, denying former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb his half-century by having him caught behind for 49, followed three balls later by Samit Patel, who clipped low to Adil Rashid at short mid-wicket for a pair – his second at Headingley in successive matches.

Tim Bresnan, bowling from the Kirkstall Lane End, also struck to win an lbw decision against Riki Wessels but James Taylor remained defiant with an unbeaten 73, helping Read add 61 in 12 overs up to lunch.
