Jack Leaning is hoping to be the latest Yorkshire player to give Jason Gillespie and Andrew Gale a selection headache during the next month.

The 20-year-old batsman has benefited from the international absence of England pair Joe Root and Gary Ballance as well as Kane Williamson, who is in the West Indies with New Zealand.

Williamson misses five Championship matches in all before returning on July 7, the second of which is against Nottinghamshire this week.

Leaning scored an aggressive fifty in the second innings of last week’s win at Northants and he said: “Hopefully that was the first of many. I’d like to convert and get a few hundreds and see where the season takes me. I feel in decent nick at the moment.

“It’s good when lads go away and play for their country. But, as good as it is for them, it’s also good for lads like myself to get an opportunity in the first team and, hopefully, take it.”
