Bradford Bulls must go on Elliott Whitehead watch for Catalan clash

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Former Bulls player Elliott Whitehead scores for Catalan against London in their Magic Weekend match Former Bulls player Elliott Whitehead scores for Catalan against London in their Magic Weekend match

Adrian Purtell admits the Bulls must stop Elliott Whitehead as they bid to get their season back on track at Catalan this coming weekend.

Former Bradford second-rower Whitehead scored twice in the Dragons’ Magic Weekend win over London Broncos on Saturday.

He had looked set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury during his side’s Challenge Cup exit at Odsal on April 27.

But the ex-West Bowling amateur returned ahead of schedule to score a classy brace which took his tally to 11 tries in just ten Super League appearances this season.

Whitehead, 24, left the Bulls last June and Purtell said: “I really rate Elliott as a player and I enjoyed being his team-mate as he’s a quality bloke.

“It’s good to see him going so well over there but hopefully we can nullify him this weekend.

“I know what he’s capable of – he scores a lot of tries and he’s not afraid to put a big hit in either.

“As a mate, I really hope he does go on and play for England because he’s certainly good enough, but it’s about what we do this weekend.

“We had a good victory against Catalan in the Challenge Cup last month. Even in that game there were a lot of areas we could have improved on but we still got the win.

“They will be ready for us this time, so we’re going to have to be even better on Saturday.”

Francis Cummins’ men are set to be bolstered by the availability of Antonio Kaufusi, Manase Manuokafoa and James Donaldson this weekend.

New recruits Jordan Baldwinson and Mason Tonks could also feature and Purtell said: “We’ve got a couple of young guys coming here who are probably itching to get a crack, so we’ve got to take the positives out of that.

“Manuokafoa and Kaufusi are an intimidating front row and hopefully Donno will be back as well.

“We’ve just got to stay positive after Sunday’s defeat to Huddersfield. There was a lot of effort there and we only had two front-rowers in Adam Sidlow and Chev Walker.

“We can’t use that as an excuse but, with the position we are in, we’ve just got to move on to Catalan positively now.

“I don’t think we can work out what is a must-win game because we want to win every game we play.”

Purtell, meanwhile, is out of contract at the end of the season and it remains to be seen where he will end up playing next year.

But the 29-year-old former Penrith Panthers man is keen to stay in England.

“I talk to my manager in Australia every now and then, so hopefully something will be sorted soon,” said Purtell.

“I enjoy England as a country and I feel that, after what happened two years ago with my heart, I’m only starting to get back to the form I know I can produce week in and week out.

“I believe there is a bit of unfinished business there for me and I like living over here. I wouldn’t mind staying over here at all.”

Meanwhile, the Bulls’ appeal over their points deduction will now be heard in the first week of June.

the way our backs tackled on Sunday we will be lucky if they get to ruffle his hair as he runs through to score.

if I was Elliot I would be targeting Henry and Foster as both were woeful in defence.

Why are the RFL dragging their heals so much? This points hearing should have been done and dusted by now. A win this weekend and four points back in a couple of weeks would make things interesting!

What is the form here? Are London improving leaps and bounds or are Catalan just abysmal on the road? This is another one of those winnable games against a Catalan side with their own injury problems. What I cannot understand is why the Bulls seem to have had a continual injury problem for the last couple of years. Yes, I know we have a small squad but so do other sides and they cope or at least seem to cope better than the Bulls. And some of our squad seem to play a a few games then miss a few games. It's a truism that winning sides appear to receive the fewest injuries. Is it technique? Or just lack of size? But I think at some point we have to stop apologising for the performances. It would be nice to see the Bulls restrict the opposition to less than 30 points. Nobody is saying win but, as others have pointed out, tackling, line speed, fitness are not about quality and quantity. They are instilled by correct coaching methods and pride in playing. Effort is only of any use if it's properly channeled. So, if the season has now started for proper, let's put Catalan to the sword by getting into their faces and putting them off playing the free-flowing, cavalier-style rugby they are known for and pinch a few on the break from Catalan's lack of ball protection. We can only do it if we believe we can do it.

Its nothing to do with the RFL.

Its an independent hearing/tribunal, which might be good news. The RFL come up with shocking decisions, this tribunal might take a different view.
Beat Catalans & Wakefield and we could be above the Wildcats after the hearing.

The RFL are a joke we were supposed to have been informed about the points this month this is not good enough from the controling body

We as a club need to know it was always going to be desided by an individual
pannel so have the goal posts moved again .
A good clear out at Red Hall may be the best thing our sport needs and put some people in who know the sport i would have Noble there he knows the sport inside out and is well respected but COYB

Hope with Manuakafoa, Donaldson and Kaufusi back we'll be more solid in defence. Against Cats in cup one of the most noticable things was the defence after the 1st 15 mins. Compare that to the Hudds game and it's a frightening difference!

The alarming thing for me was not that the opposition always find gaps, but that they just run straight through us!! Mellor was clinging on for dear life for Larne Patrick's try, but he just dragged him like a child. Was the same all over the park.

We will only get points back if we have paid off the creditors and the last statement on that subject was that none were getting paid so we I think unless there has been a massive change of direction we will not be getting any points back.

It is when it's the RFL that put the people in the inquiry.
I don't believe for one second that the RFL have nothing whatsoever to do with it. Surely whoever is heading up the enquiry should be giving us updates then and not the RFL!?
