There is much to play for in the final match of our Canal Challenge, which takes place on Sunday, May 25. Darren Watson leads the field, despite John Martin taking the second round with a 3lb 6oz haul. Martin attributes his recent win to the pinkies he fished over groundbait, which brought enough skimmers into his swim to push Dennis Freeman (2lb 2oz) into second place. The veteran was disappointed to be runner-up after appearing to have got his waggler tactics just right in the breezy conditions. Tony Greenwood remains in contention after netting 3lb 12oz in the opening match. Anyone interested in knocking Watson off his perch can contact the match secretary on 07795-243332. Away from competitive angling, all Keighley waters are in prime condition and fishing well. One member reported landing over 7lb of roach, skimmers and two specimen bream in a two-hour early-morning spell on the canal near Silsden. There have also been large numbers of roach, together with pike, being caught on Whitfield reservoir at Steeton.
The heaviest fish caught during the week ending May 4 was a 5lb 2oz rainbow trout by James Neil using GRHE. Fewston: Trout are now topping and taking emerging fly and buzzer shuck as the water gradually warms. Swinsty: Perch and roach are feeding in shoals in shallow water as trout rise further out taking shredded worm. Thruscross: Brown trout are feeding along the north-east bank as fly life is blown into shallow water. Catch details – Day ticket: Fewston 28, Swinsty 8, Thruscross (catch and return) 1; total fish caught: Fewston 88, Thruscross 3; average per rod: Fewston 3.2, Swinsty 2.0, Thruscross 3.0.
The heaviest fish caught during the week ending May 11 was a 5lb 2oz rainbow trout by R Haza using bibio. Fewston: Perfect conditions – dull and overcast, with plenty of fly life hatching – has made for an exciting week’s fishing. Swinsty: This venue has benefited from lower water levels as Fewston overflow has put both fish and feed into the nature reserve area. Thruscross: Brown trout are feeding in shallow waters, taking hatches of Hawthorn fly. Catch details – Day ticket: Fewston 33, Swinsty 8; total fish caught: Fewston 442, Swinsty 55; average per rod: Fewston 13.4, Swinsty 6.9.
Strong winds and heavy showers made fishing difficult in last week’s open match at Calverley. Result (including section winners): 1 D Moffatt 3lb 14oz, 2 D Stephenson 2lb 7oz, 3 M Mannion 1lb 14½oz, 4 G Kitchen 1lb 11oz, 5 E Harrison 1lb 2oz. The next Saturday canal open is on May 24. The first match of the evening series at Pilley’s is on Tuesday, May 27. Anyone who damages club signs or notices will be expelled from the club without further warning.
