With only two weekends gone, it is early days yet in the JCT600 Bradford League season.

And while it may not be that much of a shock to see Keighley and Undercliffe leading the way on 35 points at the head of the Division Two table, it is more of a surprise that Idle and Hartshead Moor are also unbeaten and only three points adrift of the joint leaders.

Moor were only 11th at the end of the 2013 campaign, while Idle had to apply for re-election, with only Great Horton below them.

Indeed the Cavendish Road side also had to rely on the generosity of other clubs voting them back in during 2010 and 2012 due to ending up in the bottom two of the second tier, while in two other recent seasons they have finished third from bottom.

Idle’s cricket secretary Neil Johnson says: “We have the same overseas player as last year in Nik Cumming, and we have recruited well otherwise, with players such as Joel Barnett from Birstall.

“He impressed me with his batting in our pre-season friendly against Thackley and scored 42 in our opening-day win over Bankfoot, while Simon Curry made 35 in a low-scoring match against Great Horton last week.

“Also Ijaz Ahmed has been in the wickets (4-16 v Bankfoot) and 3-38 v Great Horton). Like Waj Hussain, he bowls wicket to wicket and does a little bit with it.

“We are definitely going in the right direction as a club and, as you would expect after two wins, the team spirit is good.

“Our recruitment has meant that when we do have to pull someone in from the second team, they won’t just be juniors filling in. And the target is for us to finish as high as eighth or tenth.”

Johnson added: “The win over Bankfoot didn’t surprise me as a lot of their most experienced players have seen their best days but more impressive was the win over Great Horton after they had beaten Baildon.

“Tougher tests await us, that is for certain, and it will be interesting to see how we go on tomorrow at Hartshead Moor.”

One unbeaten record is set to go there, while Keighley host Saltaire, who were relegated last season, and Undercliffe are at home to Spen Victoria, both visitors having only played one match compared to every other team’s two.

Only three sides have won two from two in the top flight and, like in Division Two, two of them meet, with leaders Farsley hosting second-placed Morley.

St Lawrence and Woodlands, the other two 100 per centers, are at home to champions Cleckheaton and Lightcliffe respectively.
