Middlesbrough winger not out of Bradford City's Reach

Phil Parkinson will try to lure Adam Reach back to City next season if Middlesbrough don’t want him.

The winger is back in training with Boro today after his 93-day loan at Valley Parade ran out following Monday’s loss to Swindon.

That was Reach’s 18th appearance and he also scored three goals, including the spectacular free-kick against Peterborough which clinched City’s League One survival.

The 21-year-old is hoping for a spot in Boro’s squad for their final two Championship matches with Barnsley and Yeovil.

Reach, who has two years to go on his contract, believes he can make the breakthrough into Aitor Karanka’s first-team plans for next term.

But Parkinson will watch developments closely – and is keen to pounce again should he be made available for another loan.

The City boss said: “I’d definitely have him back. I like Reachy a lot and think he’s a player who’s only going to get better.

“He’ll go back to Middlesbrough for the last couple of games of the season and will hope to get included there. But between us and Shrews-bury he’s almost played a full season.

“Once you’ve had that, it’s very difficult to go back into someone’s reserves.

“He needs to progress by playing. If he continues to get that chance, he will flourish as a player.”

Boro boss Karanka brought Reach back from Shrewsbury when the Spaniard first took over from Tony Mowbray in December, before allowing him to leave on loan again to the Bantams.

Reach feels his game has developed from the demands of regular League One action.

“It was a disappointing way to end against Swindon but overall it’s been good,” he said. “I’ve played 18 games in a row and there have been a lot of positives.

“When you’re young, you can’t always play at the team you’re at. Sometimes you have to drop divisions to get games but I think the experience will improve me.

“League One is very tough and Bradford are a big club so I was never going to turn down the opportunity.

“I’m hitting the 40-game mark this season which is more than a lot of players get in the Championship.

“I might have played a handful of games at a higher standard if I’d stayed. But in the long term, this has been much better.

“Middlesbrough’s season’s petering out as is Bradford’s. I’ll go there on merit and feel I deserve a place on the bench.

“I’d like to show them what I can do and what they’ve been missing. I feel I’m more mature after this year and I’ve got stronger physically and mentally.”

I don't think it is a dream, for me Reach is a long way off being a top championship player and next season Middlesbrough will be aiming for promotion so I wouldn't be too surprised to see him back.

One of the big pluses for me where Reach is concerned is 3 goals in 18 games. We haven't had a great record recently with goals from midfield and Reach scored 3 crackers. At times his final ball hasn't been great, but that will come and his ability to get past people and in a position to deliver is excellent. I think the best we could hope for would be a long term loan but how long will a lad with his ability be happy to be out on loan and not part of a long term set up?

Reach is a promising player, still to reach is full potential, who has done well for us and I honestly believe he would make an impact in league one if it came about that we could sign him. I would be happy to see him back - he can be a very exciting player.
I think he would prefer to play for 'Boro' and it's hard to fault his ambition to do that but much will depend on whether he will feature in their future plans and of course, whether he fancies coming back to us. Time will tell...
I wish him well for the future, wherever that may be....we should know in the near future.

I think he had a few more than 2 but I do see where you are coming from.

You also have to take into account that we haven't always played to his strengths, his best game came when he was actually off the wing and down the middle v POSH.

He allowed himself to drift out of games where Reid would have been grafting back trying to claim the ball, somewhat of a lazy playing style and possibly even a lazy player, then again he reminds me quite a bit of Waddle and he drifted in and out of games and also had that loping style.

Overall...I think the lad has been POOR!...He is a way better player than he has shown.
Saw him in the youths at Boro and thought he was going to be a bit of a Superstar.....but just hasn't trained on!...NOT SURE WHY!.
Can NOW see why Boro are loaning him out, at every chance...

Sort of know what you mean.. He has the talent that's obvious.. Although to me I think one of the reasons he hasn't gone further (Whilst with us anyway) When we had Reidy & Mezza everything was going down the left.. As soon as they both go injured we just started going long.. So Reach didn't get on the ball half as much as Reid did..

I think you say it how it is. Reach is far better than Reid and if he was to progress up the league then possibly l think he could go high as he seems to have the similar skills as Chris Waddle. All we can do is see but unless Parkinson sorts his game out then l can't really see us going up at all.
I bet he could even be the front attacking midfielder that many of us have been crying out for.
