Yorkshire have enjoyed an excellent afternoon against Northamptonshire on day one at Headingley, losing only Andrew Gale on the way to 171-3 from 56 overs at tea.

Alex Lees and Gary Ballance have both reached fifties and have shared in an unbroken century partnership for the fourth wicket to take the score from 57-3 in the 26th over.

Gale was trapped lbw by Azharullah before Ballance dominated his alliance with Lees.

Lees brought up his fifty off 113 balls before Ballance reached his off 63.

Lees was handed two lives, dropped at first slip by Andrew Hall on 50 before surviving a missed stumping chance from David Murphy on 51. Lees is unbeaten on 68 and Ballance 60 not out.
