Yorkshire secured their first point of the season by advancing to 219-4 from 65 overs at tea on the first day of their LV= County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton.

The hosts’ bowling attack looked rusty before lunch but they were far better during the day’s second session, particularly at the start.

Craig Meschede trapped Andrew Gale lbw for 24 in the third over of the session – the 36th – before Meschede and Lewis Gregory bowled four successive maidens between the 39th and 42nd overs.

Adam Lyth missed out on his third Championship hundred on this ground when, on 85, he pulled a Craig Overton short ball to mid-wicket, where Gregory took a stunning one-handed catch diving to his right, leaving the score at 179-4 in the 51st over.

Gary Ballance took 25 balls to get off the mark but he has looked in good order on the way to 44 not out, while Adil Rashid resumed this afternoon on 22. They had shared 40 for the fifth wicket by the interval.
