Bradford & Bingley Barbarians were the most convincing winners in the opening round of the Spray Plant UK (Ltd) Aire-Wharfe Cup, putting 50 points past Bramley Phoenix without reply.

They are at Roundhegians in the second round, the Leeds club winning 29-10 at Skipton, who managed tries by Ben Hall and James Ackers.

Holders Old Otliensians won 42-5 at Keighley, with centre Luke Cowdell getting three of their seven tries.

Wing partner Declan Jackson claimed two, and others went to hooker Jim Dyson and lock Jack Smith. Ben Hatton added two conversions and a penalty, while Josh Hannah got Keighley’s try.

Jonathan Davies (try and conversion) and Ian Close (try) got the points for Wharfedale in their 17-12 home defeat to West Park Leeds, while Ilkley squeaked a 25-24 win at Halifax, Luke Hope-Robertson (2), Andy Malley and Hamish Munro getting tries, with Malley adding a penalty and a conversion.

Baildon were spirited in a 33-19 home defeat to West Leeds, while Aireborough saw off visitors Otley Saracens 42-12, winger Chris Brook crossing twice to add to tries, among others, by scrum half Iain Craven, lock Mark Howarth and hooker Nick Jackson.
