One of Yorkshire’s favourite sons, Harold ‘Dickie’ Bird, has been voted in as the county’s new president.
It was announced last month that the county would put forward the name of arguably the world’s most famous umpire at their annual general meeting.
That proposal was heard on Saturday morning and the 80-year-old, who played for Yorkshire and Leicestershire before donning the white coat, received a 91 per cent approval from members.
Barnsley-born Bird inherits the post from Geoffrey Boycott and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Lord Hawke, FS Jackson, Sir Leonard Hutton and Brian Close.
Yorkshire said on their Twitter feed that Bird accepted the one-year role with a “tear in his eye”.
Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar - a former overseas player for the county - was given honorary life membership at the meeting.
