Guiseley closing in on play-off zone

Guiseley put themselves on the verge of the Conference North play-off places in midweek when they stretched their unbeaten run to nine games.

That should see them bristling with confidence as they make the journey to second-bottom Oxford City on Saturday.

While the Lions are just outside the promotion play-off zone, on goal difference only with two games in hand on some of the clubs above them, relegation-threatened Oxford are six points from safety, although they also have games in hand.

Following his team’s 3-2 win at Stalybridge Celtic last night, Guiseley boss Mark Bower said: “It was difficult but hopefully the way we got the three points, coming from behind, will have lifted the dressing room.”

From the outside looking in, it would seem that the squad were buoyant enough after knocking North Ferriby United off the summit last weekend.

Guiseley beat the then leaders 1-0 at Nethermoor but it was a draining victory as they played the last 25 minutes a man down after Ben Parker’s sending off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

“It has been a heavy fixture list and Saturday took more out of us than we thought,” said Bower.

“So we needed fresh legs on Wednesday and the substitutes turned it around for us – but that’s what we’ve got a squad for.

“Everyone in the squad has got a part to play and it’s vitally important that they are all ready when called upon.

“We won’t take Oxford or anyone else lightly. As I have said before, there are no easy games in this division.

“We have to go there and play better than we did on Wednesday and, if we do, we are capable of putting another three points on the board. But we have to be up for it.”
