Magnificent Fagan key to Silsden survival

Silsden will beat the drop this term because of the strength of their centre-back pairing, believes club official Jim Rosser.

Following a glut of postponements during the worst spell of the wettest winter on record, the Cobbydalers banked just one point from a possible 12.

That sequence ended with Thursday’s 3-2 win at Winsford United in leafy Cheshire.

Rosser said: “Winsford had played on the Tuesday as well so it was difficult for them but they didn’t appear to be too tired. They gave us a game alright and, even though we were 2-0 up at half-time, it was a nervy ending.

“They got a foothold in the game when big Mikey (Hall) was adjudged to have handballed in the area.

“Then Ben Lamb was unfortunate because he slipped, which allowed their lad to score a second which made it all square.”

Danny Fagan was unavailable at centre back and Rosser believes his reintroduction alongside Danny Gleave will ensure a drama-free end to the campaign.

“The two of them have been absolutely exceptional over recent weeks,” said Rosser.

“Gleave is solid and has played really well but Fagan has been magnificent. Andy (Geary, manager) has been building a good side – a young side but a promising one –and for my money he has got it right by starting from the back.

“We’re not safe yet but I think if Andy can keep this squad together, with the experience they are gaining this season, that we will re-establish ourselves.”
