Bradford veterans finish on a high
Bradford faced a tense last day in Division One of the Yorkshire Veterans' League when the final round of fixtures took place at Heckmondwike.
The Bradford first team had recorded only one victory from their first six matches and were next to bottom, one point above Hull Seconds but just a point behind Keighley and Doncaster.
They had to play both Hull and Keighley and needed to win both games to ensure safety.
Keighley included former Bradford player Kevin Pickles in their line-up and he was in great form, dropping only one game in winning his three singles.
But Bradford produced a solid team effort which saw Graham Manicom and Richard Priestley taking two each, with Neil Harris adding a single.
They also won the doubles for a 6-4 overall success – and with Hull and Doncaster both losing their matches, there were now three teams below Bradford and victory over Hull would be enough.
The Bradford trio rose to the occasion and secured an 8-2 verdict, with Manicom unbeaten.
And they finished the day with a hat-trick of victories after a 6-4 verdict against Huddersfield, with Harris the three-win hero this time as his side ended the season is sixth place.
Meanwhile, the promotion battle in Division Four of the Bradford League is reaching an exciting climax.
Laisterdyke B are clear at the top but four teams are chasing second place.
Hermits H avenged two heavy defeats against Rastrick earlier in the season with a crucial 6-4 success in their third meeting.
Rastrick led 3-1 but Kath Manogue and Tim Moran won twice each, while Zarnab Jamal added one.
Hermits also won the doubles and only eight points now separate them, Hermits G, Pudsey B and Rastrick in the race for second place.
