Francis Cummins is urging his Bulls side to cut out the mistakes as they bid to chop Huddersfield Giants down to size tomorrow.

Cummins was left frustrated after his team made a glut of errors during last week’s defeat at Hull FC. But he believes the blunders stemmed from overplaying at times and is now calling on his men to control possession better and complete their sets.

The Bulls coach said: “We gave away too much ball at Hull and I think we made eight yardage errors and came up with a couple of bad kicks.

“So that’s ten errors and, while Hull played well, we just made too many mistakes.

“We were poor on the night and sometimes that can happen, so you’ve got to dust yourselves off and go again.

“We’ve looked in review this week and there were a couple of mistakes where we have overplayed, which is the frustrating bit.”

Cummins, whose side beat Huddersfield home and away last season, is keen to play the game the right way and his philosophy will not change despite the scarcity of resources at his disposal.

After seeing Garreth Carvell and Nick Scruton depart following the club’s slide into administration, Cummins lost Wigan loanee Greg Burke to injury last weekend.

To make matters worse, on-loan Huddersfield prop Anthony Mullally is ineligible to face his parent club tomorrow, leaving the Bulls with only two recognised front-rowers in Manase Manuokafoa and Adam Sidlow.

Cummins said: “You evaluate how you want to play the game and we haven’t got the biggest middle unit at the moment.

Chev Walker played as a middle last year and we might have to move people around as we get going – that’s just the nature of it. But they are the kind of things we’ll have to do.

“It’s frustrating that Mulls can’t play for us this weekend but we’re in a position where we are totally grateful for having him here in the first place and I totally understand Huddersfield’s stance.

“The easiest thing would be to stop passing the ball, run from dummy half and kick the ball as far as you can – but that wouldn’t help us either.

“There are times to do that but we’ve got to carry on with what we believe in and if it’s there to pass it then we will.

“We might have to just play the percentages a little bit more early on to get that foundation set and then we’ll play.

“When we got some good ball and didn’t panic, we looked really good at times last week. We got down Hull’s end three times in the first half and scored twice.

“The other time we panicked but we’ve got enough quality to score against any team.

“We’ve just got to be able to stay in the arm-wrestle and not give all that possession over.”

Tomorrow’s match will see Craig Kopczak return to Odsal for the first time since his controversial departure in September 2012.

The Wales prop will lead a heavyweight Giants pack but Cummins is wary of their threat in every department.

The Bulls boss said: “Huddersfield will come at us down the middle but they’ve got some nice backs who can get on the end of things as well.

“Their threats are all over and they have a nice variation of where they can go down the middle and also shift the ball around.

“They’re a good team and would probably hope to be a little bit higher on the ladder by now.

“They are showing really good glimpses even if they’re perhaps looking as if they’re not quite in top form and not managing to get a roll-on.”

But Cummins is more bothered about his own team and is continuing to remain focused on what happens on the field amid the lingering uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership.

“Our first goal is to get back on zero points and then kick on from there,” he said.

“We want to win every game because at the end of the day, you’ve got to win to stay up. We just need to improve on last week and get some form back.”
