Bradford Park Avenue 1 Workington 0

Park Avenue finally rediscovered the winning feeling when they beat Conference North basement outfit Workington last night.

Chib Chilaka was Avenue’s hero after netting the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

The victory brought their five-match winless streak to an end that stretched back into January, lifting them back up to 13th and easing concerns at Horsfall Stadium.

It was a game of few chances and little goalmouth action but Bradford boss John Decaey summed it up in one word “solid”, which was just what was needed.

The Cumbrian outfit may be propping up the table but they came to Horsfall on the back of two morale-boosting wins. But after a tense opening spell the home side broke the deadlock.

Good work from midfielder Richard Marshall ended with him laying the ball off to Chilaka, who fired a shot into the bottom corner.

The visitors’ Valter Fernandez had a couple of half-chances after that but Avenue took their slender advantage into the break and defended it afterwards.

Centre back James Knowles was back from a four-game ban and came straight back into the side and they had a new signing on the bench. Midfielder Dean Bartle, a former Leeds United youth, is on dual registration with Evo-Stik League outfit Ossett Town.
