4:58pm

Clayton Donaldson maintained his curse on his hometown club as City came up empty at high-flying Brentford.
Manningham-born Donaldson netted the second-half opener to break City’s stubborn resistance and the Bees went on to take the three points comfortably.
City were missing both James Hanson and Andrew Davies, while new loan recruit Adam Drury was on the bench.
With Aaron Mclean as the lone striker, Phil Parkinson set the visitors up to keep it tight and frustrate – and they did in the first half.
The Bees had most of the play but did little to ruffle the visitors. Had Chris Atkinson, making his full debut, shown a little more composure with his shot then City might have sneaked in front.
But Brentford stepped up a gear after the break – and their increasing pressure was rewarded after 61 minutes with a precise low finish from Donaldson.
He should have had another straight after but McLaughlin pulled off a fine double save.
But Brentford made their control count with a soft, deflected second by George Saville.
City tried a late rally but it needed another superb point-blank block from McLaughlin to deny Saville a third.

4:57pm

That's your lot. 2-0 to Brentford

4:53pm

Drury has got a card to celebrate his debut - a yellow card for a foul

4:53pm

Crowd is 8,063 with 958 City fans

4:52pm

A swing and a miss from Judge with an air shot on the edge of the City box

4:51pm

Five added minutes to play

4:51pm

Judge shot beaten out by McLaughlin...

4:47pm

Donaldson replaced by Dallas...

4:46pm

Terrific save from McLaughlin to somehow keep out Saville header from almost point-blank range...

4:45pm

Tarkowski towers above the crowd to clear but Jones forces another corner...

4:45pm

Another City corner

4:44pm

McHugh subbed by Drury for the left back's debut. Mclean also going off as Thompson comes on

4:43pm

McArdle flick header flashes across goal. It's close .... but not close enough

4:42pm

Corner for City. Maybe, just maybe??

4:41pm

Trotter shouting for a penalty from McLaughlin challenge but referee unimpressed. The Italian is lucky not to get booked for diving

4:37pm

Saville blasts another effort high and wide but Brentford are dominant

4:36pm

City shoot themselves in the foot by conceding a soft second. Lots of chances to clear the danger but SAVILLE converts with a deflected effort. 2-0 down

4:34pm

Jones picks out Gray but there is no power on the sub's downward header

4:34pm

Free-kick for City....

4:33pm

Sub Reeves has chance to increase City's misery but McHugh half-stops his first shot and McLaughlin saves second effort

4:31pm

Atkinson makes way for Gray as City resort to 4-4-2...

4:31pm

Saville takes it but his attempted curler clears far post

4:30pm

Donaldson's heels clipped level with the City D. More defending to do...

4:28pm

Crucial double save from McLaughlin to keep out headers from Trotta and Bidwell - and keep City in the game for now

4:27pm

It should be 2-0 as Trotta, with his first touch, sets up Donaldson six yards out. But the striker makes a pig's ear of chance and scoops over the bar...

4:26pm

And a second Brentford sub as Grigg is replaced by Trotta

4:24pm

City will have to re-think the game plan now.

4:24pm

Brentford make their first sub, Reeves for Forshaw

4:22pm

Brentford in front from the first shot on target of the game. Donaldson shifts ball cleverly before firing low into bottom corner from the edge of the box. 1-0 down...

4:22pm

Mclean all bandaged up now like a modern day Terry Butcher...

4:20pm

Darby stretches to intercept McCormack cross and almost puts it into his own net...

4:19pm

And finally we resume with Jones free-kick. McArdle gets in front of defender to make header but it's blocked and Bennett eventually scuffs shot wide.

4:18pm

4:18pm

4:18pm

Mclean came out on the wrong end of a clash of heads. Still being sorted by physio Matt Barrass

4:16pm

Parkinson furious as Mclean caught late. Striker down for more treatment

4:16pm

Donaldson gets on the end of Forshaw setpiece but cannot get enough on it and it bounces wide

4:15pm

Can clearly see that Brentford have a free-kick 25 yards out...

4:15pm

Clever run from Judge shimmies round the stanchion of the main stand.... great view of one end from the press box!

4:13pm

Ten shots in the game so far. Still to have one on target from anyone

4:11pm

Saville tries an optimistic drive from long range which bobbles away harmlessly

4:11pm

City do have some room on the break as Bees push more men forward. But the visitors need to be more positive in possession

4:09pm

Brentford have gone up a gear since the break

4:08pm

Closest yet from Brentford as Grigg's first-time half volley just beats far post. McLaughlin wouldn't have got there...

4:07pm

Another corner but flag up for a Brentford push

4:07pm

Taken short to Bidwell and McLaughlin punches clear through crowd.

4:06pm

McHugh takes one in the, ahem, bread basket from Donaldson. Corner to Brentford

4:05pm

City get us back underway..

3:56pm

3:49pm

That's half the job done. 0-0 at the break

3:48pm

Much better run from Reach cutting in on the angle from the right wing. Finds enough space for a left-foot drive over the bar

3:47pm

Two minutes added on

3:47pm

Lack of conviction by City when they do go forward...

3:45pm

Jones attempts to ease the load on the defence with a burst forward. But Reach cannot keep his pass in play and back come Brentford...

3:43pm

Basically a game of attack and defence at the moment but City keeping it very tight

3:42pm

Bates makes room for a cross but the ball is too deep for intended target Reach

3:40pm

Fortunate touch from Doyle does enough to flick Grigg's cross out of harm's way

3:39pm

The away fans spot Hanson in the crowd and encourage him to "give them a song"..... disappointingly no sign of a quick chorus from the big man

3:38pm

Douglas under no pressure as he heads free-kick away...

3:38pm

Wingers switch sides. Bennett fould on the left to give City chance to pump ball into the Brentford box...

3:36pm

Great cross from Bidwell has McLaughlin at full stretch. Gets enough on it to palm on to Bates for Brentford corner

3:34pm

Button's goal kick shanks straight into touch and you can hear some frustrated grumbles from the stand

3:32pm

Brentford have had a lot of the ball but yet to really hurt the visitors. Disciplined display from City up to now

3:31pm

Best effort from Brentford so far. Tarkowski plays ball out of defence to Forshaw and Saville takes it on before driving just wide from 25 yards..

3:28pm

As the noise levels rise all round the ground, Darby rises "like a salmon" to head away Brentford free-kick

3:27pm

First Brentford chant gets an ironic cheer from the away end.

3:26pm

Tarkowski loops header over the bar but McLaughlin had it covered

3:25pm

Parkinson getting some stern words from referee Darren Bond after complaining too vociferously about a free-kick

3:23pm

Teams stop for drinks break as Mclean gets some treatment for knock off the ball

3:23pm

Mclean on the floor as City play on through Bennett. Good skills from the winger before laying ball back to Atkinson who hooks shot over the bar

3:22pm

Another good tackle from McHugh. Looks much happier back in his natural role in middle

3:17pm

City getting their tactics right so far but long way to go...

3:17pm

Judge creates some space for shot from 18 yards but drags it past near post

3:15pm

Jones whips in to near post. Drops to Doyle on penalty spot and Reach turns it back in but McHugh loops header well over

3:15pm

Corner for City...

3:13pm

Full length dive from McLaughlin to gather McHugh back header and prevent a corner

3:11pm

Very loud away support...

3:10pm

Hideously directed shot from Forshaw. Greeted with a chorus politely enquiring the nature of his effort...

3:09pm

McArdle denies Grigg cross at expense of first corner of the game

3:07pm

Donaldson finds space in corner of area but shot on turn flies well wide - and he kops plenty of stick from the travelling support

3:07pm

Bennett almost takes down Reach's deep cross but Brentford break fast. Important block from McHugh edge of his own box to deny Judge

3:06pm

Reach works hard to win City throw-in right by the corner flag. Chance to test Brentford for the first time

3:05pm

Tarkowski threads pass through massed ranks of City midfield but Forshaw shot charged down by McArdle

3:03pm

City fans making plenty of noise. Know their side is going to need support today

3:02pm

Brentford kicking off towards the end occupied by the City fans...

2:57pm

Brent-faaaarddd shouts the PA and out come the two teams. City in their natty sky blue ...

2:50pm

Surprised that Drury is not starting but then again he hasn't played a senior game since August so will lack match practice. Presumably, he will be in line to feature at Colchester on Tuesday

2:49pm

Pitch being watered now. Wouldn't have needed that a couple of weeks ago!

2:48pm

Warning: Brentford have won all 16 games this season when they are leading at half-time.

Then again, Stevenage had lost the same when they were trailing at the break. Until last week....

2:42pm

2:36pm

Atkinson likely to play an attacking midfield role, making it a 4-4-1-1 when City have the ball. Otherwise 4-5-1...

2:33pm

Last time we were down here for the FA Cup in December 2012 it was baltic. Today it's a beautiful spring day - they were even firing up a barbeque in a garden round the corner!

2:23pm

2:23pm

2:17pm

Clayton Donaldson has not scored for six games for Brentford. But the Manningham-born marksman loves to score against City!

Brentford have replaced Marcello Trotta with Will Grigg up front. Alan McCormack is also fit to return at right back.

BRENTFORD: Button, McCormack, Craig, Tarkowski, Bidwell, Forshaw, Douglas, Saville, Donaldson, Grigg, Judge. Subs: O'Connor, Dallas, Fillo, Reeves, Yennaris, Trotta, Lee.

2:12pm

2:12pm

2:12pm

James Hanson tweaked his groin - that's why he's not playing although he is here.

Matty Dolan is not included because clubs can only name five loans in their 16-man squad. Adam Drury's arrival yesterday takes City's tally to six so Dolan is the odd man out.

2:06pm

City are missing Andrew Davies and James Hanson from the starting line-up.

Despite the club's confidence yesterday, Davies is still feeling his calf problem and has not been risked.

Hanson's absence is a mystery for now - he must have tweaked something in training because he seemed fine on Thursday morning.

Adam Drury's loan went through in time but the Leeds left back is still only on the bench. It looks like Matthew Bates will play there, with Carl McHugh moving back to centre half.

Chris Atkinson makes his full debut in a five-man midfield, with Aaron Mclean playing as the lone striker.

CITY: McLaughlin, Darby, McArdle, McHugh, Bates, Bennett, Jones, Doyle, Reach, Atkinson, Mclean. Subs: Jameson, Drury, Gray, Thompson, Yeates, McBurnie, Stockdill.

1:56pm

City have just been out for a look at the pitch, which looks very dry. No team news just yet

1:28pm

1:27pm

Good afternoon and welcome from a sunny Griffin Park for one of City's toughest tests of the season.

They haven't won at Brentford since 2004 when Zema Abbey had an eventful debut, scoring and getting sent off inside the first 20 minutes.

On the basis of the 'Pulse' radio commentary, City did quite well at times v Brentford but the first goal still had an inevitability about it (defence stood back and let him shoot-ring any bells!!) and though some fans might have feared worse than a 2-0 defeat to the high-flyers, before kick off, its still a defeat with not a goal from a striker.

The fact our strikers (apart from 'JH') 'can't score for toffee' still threatens our season and I'd like to see 'PP' bring in an emergency loan striker (of the Adam Reach-young- higher standard-never going to sign him permamently-but he will get us a few goals before May 2014- type')

I said last week we had no option but to persevere with Aaron McLean, but if we could bring in a loanee, perhaps we could loan 'AMc' out. Certainly Andy Gray and young/green Oliver McBurnie are not good enough to be relied upon.

In the end. 'PP' went (finally) for a loan left back but it took him a while. Now we need a loan striker to work with 'JH'. Not in three/four weeks time...but..NOW!!!

I agree about emergency loan striker but it won't happen while Parky is in charge as would prove he has failed in his signings.
Andy Gray is another flop on high salary.
It worries me upfront.
Apart from Hanson we look like we will not really score many.
GOALS are needed in relegation battles which we might find we will be in!

Looking at the league table, its noticeable how Sheff. Utd have really got going and are now out of the drop zone and above City. In fact the Bantams lie just six points above 'danger'-the six points we got v MKDons/Port Vale. Let's hope no other teams below City start 'doing a Sheff. Utd' because that could push others downwards.

That end of season, 'fizzle-out' (with no shocks)Jamie Lawrence said he hoped for is beginning to look more, more desirable!!

If Hanson had been fit, he would have played. Therefore, in his absence, I would have thought his natural replacement, Gray, should have started. The fact he didn't represents a massive vote of "no confidence" in him, from his manager.

We appeared to have set up with a "damage limitation" policy, hoping to nick a goal, and hang on to it. The inevitable happened and the game is lost. Quelle surprise!!!

Leeds loan us an experienced left back for a month, so he can get some games in his short spell with us ....and he sits on the bench!

Somebody needs to get a grip, quickly.

Right so we have now reached Cup Final time...four eminently winnable matches between us and certain safely. ..beat Colchester, Gillingham, Shrewsbury and Walsall and we will, in reality, be completely safe - especially as we already have ten teams below us now (not including Crawley). Twelve points and we can lose to Orient without concern...the only concern is will we win them - or at the very least attain a minimum of eight points. Atkinson needs more game time as does Dolan - rather than Doyle -
Drury must start these games alongside Davies and Hanson-then I think we will get the 8-12 points that should be completely achieveable..McLean scoring would probably be essential for this haul...five points or less and I think it will get very tense.

Atkinson needs more game time as does Dolan - rather than Doyle -
Drury must start these games alongside Davies and Hanson-then I think we will get the 8-12 points that should be completely achieveable..McLean scoring would probably be essential for this haul...five points or less and I think it will get very tense.
We will definitely set out not to lose these games.

Sadly, we can't look at games that are winnable on paper. Stevenage was one such game and look what happened.

The availability of key players is also a major factor. Davies and Hanson were badly missed today.

The main worry for me is that once we go behind, and we need to chase the game, we've no goal threat to bring off the bench.

I do hope McLean comes good. He must be as fed up as we are at his lack of success to date. As you say, Aaran starting to find the net appears vital in our fight for safety.

Before we start what Parky did last season was unbelievable and I will probably never experience anything like it again as a city fan ! Also been a fan since I was 6 years old and watched city since 1986 but I must admit parky had a hell of a lot of luck on the way and that unfortunately is showing now as this division IS a step too far for a one dimensional manager who's only way of playing is a long ball to Hanson and hope for a flick on . This is a FACT and I believe but hope I am wrong but we will be playing in english footballs basement division again next season ! God I hope I am wrong but I got a horrible feeling

Hi shaun, I'm still smarting at the loss of Nahki, exacerbated by the failure, to date, of his replacement.

McLean's contract will swallow up a major proportion of the fee and, if what we've seen to date is what the future holds, what a heartbreak that's going to be.

Most of PP's signings have been brought into question since he came to the club, is it his fault or is our scouting system non existent. How do we continually miss out young upcoming players that clubs with smaller budgets seem to find every season? Instead we opt for aging has beens like gray, yeates and so far mclean. Jones still hasnt been replaced and most wont agree but to me with jones in the team we lack the pace in the middle of the park to hurt teams and he shouldnt be playing week in week out. I dont think we will go down but neither do i think we will progress under pp's lump it football plan. I dont think we can afford to sack him either, i like the guy he comes across very well but he's run his course imo

It was always going to be a tough ask getting something at a place like Brentford, which was made a whole lot more difficult, without Hanson and Davies. I think he decided not to risk them with the Colchester game coming up, which is obviously more winable.

Feel sorry for Dolan not being able to be on the bench due to the loan players rule. It begs the question why did we need to bring both him and Atkinson in, when Bates could fill in centre midfield, and we were always looking for a left back. We have wasted some money on loans over the last few years.

As for Drury, I am sure that when he has had a couple of training sessions with the lads, and Parky has been able to assess his fitness, he will probably start, if not Tuesday, then the weekend.

The way I look at it, the next four games offer us a great chance of getting a significant number of points, which will go a long way to securing our safety.

Not getting involved in your predictable negative drivel. But at least get your facts right. Andrew Davies has a clause in his contract that makes him the club's top earner. Confirmed by Baldwin in a recent interview when he said Davies received a pay increase when we signed McLean due to the clause in his contract

was at yesterdays game and we were garbage with nothing gong forward. Johnny Mac looked clueless on low shots in training so guess what?

Darby and the two Mcs at centre half did well but there was no cover in front of them as Jones and Doyle were useless.

A big pitch and Jones could hardly reach the six yard box.

Parky in another row with the opposition which led to a long lecture.
Overall a poor, very poor, very very poor performance.

Toothpaste at centre forward was worse than useless

Think tooth paste was a gamble and even though he was poor for Hull I think Mr Parkinson thought he was probably playing out of his depth but the real fact is he just got lucky at Peterborough.
He will never hit that form again so what a waste of money in my eyes.

macca, I didn't hear that interview.

Unbelievable! So,not only will the majority of the Wells fee go in McLean's wages over the duration of his contract, but we've also had to give Davies an unnecessary pay increase?

We may as well have just kept Alan Connell until the end of the season and banked the Wells cash. It couldn't have been any worse. As somebody else said earlier, do we have any semblance of a scouting system?

If we continue like this, we'll end up in queer street like the Bulls

I hope he does too. Ignoring his lack of goals, one would have thought that his alleged pedigree would have stood out, regardless of how badly the team is playing.

He can't hold a candle to Nahki , who's best years are still ahead of him, whereas Aaron's are behind him.

The fee we got for Nahki looks even worse now than it did at the time. It looks like we've been legged up twice over!

McLean was always on a loser replacing wells, who was a class act, able to feed off scraps and make something of it. I agree with the other poster that said having him enabled PP to paper over the cracks. You think we sold wells cheap? What do you think that he was worth? And how can you expect a player coming in on a freeby to be as good? I agree that he has not looked anything special but I think PP has a lot to answer for, not adjusting our style etc.

don't think any club is going to let a good goal scorer go unless he ask's to go, even then they will not transfer easily. that's why we have Gray and Mclean. not scoring much anymore. I agree with the earlier comments, " who is watching and recommending these strikers"?

Anyone can see...Mclean has not got the faintest clue where the goals are!....Last years EVEN worse signing "Gray" is slower than ME! and these two players are on more money than anyone at City (In Mcleans case, twice more than anyone??)
And lets not get started on his Loanees!!.
Just shows how much "WELLS" papered over the cracks at City!.
Not getting involved in your predictable negative drivel. But at least get your facts right. Andrew Davies has a clause in his contract that makes him the club's top earner. Confirmed by Baldwin in a recent interview when he said Davies received a pay increase when we signed McLean due to the clause in his contract
WELL IN THAT CASE....IM LOST FOR WORDS!!.
this is BEYOND SHOCKING!.......Ever
y last penny from the Wells signing will go on the AMAZING "Mclean deal".....I know how much "Gray" is on (Enough to make anyone "Throw up!").....So Davies gets a massive wage boost due to the useless McClean!
IF THIS IS RIGHT????.....PLEASE
, PLEASE, PLEASE...YOUR NOT!

Absolutely spot on.
I agree poor tactics and poor defending poor performance we want to see proper football no hit and hope
